Brumbies unloved by sponsors

By johnboy - 25 December 2011 2

The Canberra Times has the unhappy news that the Brumbies have been shocked to learn Huawei is walking away from sponsorship negotiations leaving our brave lads with a million dollar hole in their budget.

They’re hoping the Australian Rugby Union will bail them out as has been done for NSW and Queensland in the past.

This is a dangerous line of thinking. The ARU can’t imagine a world without the Reds or Waratahs, but one can’t see the tears running down their faces should the Brumbies disappear.

What’s Your opinion?

Huawei certainly is an interesting company.

It’s unfortuante that the Canberra Times failed to report the full story here.

The Australian has a bit more detail:

“It is understood the China-based board of the company actually had signed off on the Brumbies deal and even had approved jersey designs incorporating the company logo when Huawei’s satellite board in Australia encountered a massive problem unconnected to the club and withdrew its lucrative sponsorship.

That has given rise to speculation that Huawei had been told it would be allocated no part of the National Broadband Network rollout, but a company spokesman said yesterday Huawei was still hopeful of becoming a major supplier to that project.”

However, Fagan mentioned today that the club were back in talks with the company (and other backups) as they are still looking to be a sponsoring partner in the Australian conference of the SupeRugby competition.
