Pitcher Brian Grening might have retired two months ago but that didn’t stop the Canberra Cavalry legend claiming another award.

The Australian Baseball League awarded Grening as 2017/18 BLK Pitching Champion this week, as the Cavs legend bowed out as the ABL’s all-time strikeout leader (376).

Since his debut in November 2011, Grening has been consistently brilliant for the Cavalry during his 87 appearances in the nation’s capital.

The 32-year-old hung up the cleats after pitching the Cavalry to a game one victory over the Brisbane Bandits in the ABL championship series last season.

In his retirement press release, Grening said the home game against the Bandits was one of the best nights of his career.

“I couldn’t have thought of a better way to end my career: in Canberra, in the Championship Series, in front of the best fans in the ABL,” he said.

“For many reasons, it was one of the best nights of my career and I will never forget it.”

The Canberra legend was also part of the Cavs 2012-13 Claxton Shield winning team.
