Custom equipment will be sent from Victoria to reopen a NSW snow resort just in time for school holidays.
A fire broke out in the Charlotte Pass Snow Resort’s sewage treatment plant on the morning of 17 May.
It took about two hours for firefighters to bring the blaze under control, but it damaged the part of the building that housed the plant’s main controls, pumps and automation.
This meant the resort was unable to process wastewater from taps, showers or toilets. The resort was closed for the foreseeable future.
However, following extensive investigations, it was determined that the only viable option would be the restoration of temporary services to the existing sewage treatment plant.
The plan involves the purchase and rapid construction of custom containerised equipment to provide the necessary electrical, aeration, disinfection and treatment processes for the resort.
AKS Industries has been engaged to construct and install this containerised equipment.
Resort chairman Kevin Blyton welcomed the plan.
“I am pleased that a solution has been found to ensure the 2024 snow season can continue,” he said.
“We look forward to welcoming our valued guests back to the resort.
“I’d like to thank the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) for their support in leading the approval process to enable the use of temporary facilities this season.”
Subject to snow conditions, lifts will start spinning on Friday, 5 July, when the resort will welcome guest arrivals for all overnight accommodation.
Construction of the new equipment has already started, with fabrication occurring at AKS Industries’ factory in Victoria.
Delivery to the snow resort is expected in the week of 24 June.
The proposal has received the in-principle support of the NPWS Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure and the NSW Environment Protection Agency.
Charlotte Pass Snow Resort general manager Angela Murdoch expressed her appreciation to AKS Industries for agreeing to undertake the project.
“The task that AKS Industries has committed to is a mammoth one, with the construction work expected to be completed within a 31-day window,” she said.
“The construction of these types of services would typically take several months.”
Guests with bookings for dates before 5 July can move their reservation to late in the 2024 snow season, postpone it to next year or seek a refund.
There will be no public access to Charlotte Pass Village until 5 July.
