Cheap eats - The Coffee Grounds (ANU)

A mate asked me to meet him at the ANU as he wanted me to try out the campus café, The Coffee Grounds. I must admit that I did not have high expectations of a café on a university campus as I had envisioned being surrounded by students and eating boring food in a daggy food hall… Well, wasn’t I in for a treat?

The Coffee Grounds is certainly a place for a cheap lunch and there are plenty of interesting options including burgers, wraps and salads. They have also invested in a very good barista and serve Canberra’s own coffee brand, ONA. The interior was one of the nicest surprises with a very trendy indoor plant wall and timber finishes giving it a warm comfortable feel.

Being a fan of all things spicy I decided to give the spicy kransky dog (pictured) a ‘red hot’ go (pun very much intended). Now, stay with me as I describe one of the most heavenly RiotAct Cheap Eats moments I have had the pleasure of experiencing…

The dog was presented well, was juicy and (after I chose to add the special spicy sauce) was the right amount of ‘spice.’ The bread was a highlight for me and was a perfectly crisp and light and the onions were caramelised really nicely.

This spicy kransky was by far the best hot dog I have ever had! Big call, but a true fact!

I will definitely be adding The Coffee Grounds at ANU to my list of favourite cheap eats spots in Canberra. The food was not only delicious but also very reasonably priced at $9.90 for a gourmet dog (dog with coffee or drink for $13).

After having such an unforgettable food affair at The Coffee Grounds, I felt the gentlemanly thing to do would be to introduce myself to the owner! Luckily I did, as he has kindly offered RiotACT readers (who mention this article) any gourmet hot dog and a drink for $9.00! The offer will last until 20 June 2014.

so, is this the purple pickle with a name change? or wholesale change of management? pp was always good for a cheap eat – excellent burgers with wedges and quite drinkable coffee.

and btw, ‘but a true fact!‘; there’s a non-true one?
