Dear ACT election candidates, why can I not find any info on you?

So in a rare moment of boredom and civic responsibility, I decided to have a read up on the candidates for the election, but surprised two find little obvious candidate info from the greens or the LDP…

A) The ACT Greens – you tell me who they are, but not about them?
B) iberal Democratic Party – interesting to see your 2008 candidate, but how about some current info?
C) Australian Motorist Party – ok
D) Canberra Liberals – ok
E) Bullet Train for Canberra – ok (via Facebook)
F) ACT Labor – ok
Philip POCOCK – ok, hates fags, I get it….good luck you bigot.

Yeah – thanks. I’d seen his web site and, like it, the Crimes article tells us what he doesn’t like, but says nothing about any thoughts, policies or proposals about what government should do. Nice of him to offer half his salary to charity, but if he wants me to vote for him he’s going to have to tell me what he’d actually do as a representative.

He says quite clearly what he would do as an MLA. Sounds like it’s not what you want, but he does say it. If you want more info, his website invites comments and questions at the end of each page. Ask him.

Sadly, nothing at all about Emmanual Ezekial Hart or Norm Gyngell. I guess your mate couldn’t find anything about them either. 🙁

Today’s candidate article in the Canberra Times was about Norm Gyngell.

I didn’t know anything about him, so looked him up. He has a website here:

Hi Kevin,

A friend and I have developed http://www.canvote.org with profiles on all of the candidates running in the ACT election.

Give this a shot.

That’s a very useful site, but Jeez it’s hard on the eyes.

1. Re your policy: Freedom and privacy for individuals, you say that you “will seek to ban the use of
point-to-point camera systems for any purpose other than speed detection”. Sorry, I may well have missed something, but are there really any other uses for them?

The original baseline Forward Design Study for P2P included scope for criminal investigative support.
You didn’t really think through the implication, did you?

Note: Above Point-to-Point Forward Design Study used as example as it not only mentions a design-scope, but goes into more detailed project requirements, storage, potential for liability etc, of using the proposed camera system as a public mass surveillance tool or for for potential assistance in criminal investigations unrelated to traffic offences…

skidbladnir, I did think about them as a useful tool for jogging my memory when I go from one room to another and have forgotten what it was that I was looking for, but can you clarify for me if the ACT government is planning to use PTP cameras for criminal surveillance purposes? And if there are no plans to use them for that purpose, is it a useful part of a candidates platform to oppose them?? Of course, if they want to oppose PTP cameras for what they are actually being used for now (ie speeding) that seems a more concrete proposal to me …

Hi Kevin,

A friend of mine has created http://www.canvote.org which has profiles on all the running candidates. Most have taken time to get their information and policies in.

Alas we have had issues trying to get google to pick it up with general electoral searches.

Hope this helps. 🙂

An eye-gougingly awful site (shades of Angelfire), though with very good information.

Hello Pirate Party People

I’ve been looking at your policies (thank you pirate_taco) and had a couple of questions. Hope you don’t mind me using a public forum like this to ask them.

1. Re your policy: Freedom and privacy for individuals, you say that you “will seek to ban the use of
point-to-point camera systems for any purpose other than speed detection”. Sorry, I may well have missed something, but are there really any other uses for them?

2. Like your bus/transport ideas, also support for music and cultural activities, but have you got any thoughts about health and education?

3. What do you reckon about the hike in rates to replace stamp duty?

4. Any other thoughts/comments you might want to address to a fairly disaffected usually-Labor-but-can’t-bring-myself-to-vote-liberal voter?

Cheers and ah hoy!

I posted the same question in another thread. I can’t find any info at all on Emmanual Ezekial Hart; Norm Gyngell tells us what he doesn’t like but nothing about his own policies or ideas and Community Alliance, from what I’ve been able to glean, is just a front for the Libs.

Surely there should be some requirement for candidates to tell people what they’re about.

There is information about the Greens incumbents under the MLA link on the Greens site. The links to their Facebook and Twitter accounts are there too.

Would you evaluate a political candidate based on a blurb they wrote to woo you to vote for them? Or would you invest some effort to learn more about who they are and what they stand for?

Thanks for links, taco – Independent Michael Lindfield looks impressive for Brindabella I must say (from his website). I would like to know more about Calvin Pearce though, can’t find anything at all.

I’ve got to say, Michael’s website does a good job of putting forward a case to vote for him.

Kevn, great to see interest. Yes the website is a bit light on isn’t it?

You can find out plenty about me through my blog: http://alankerlin.blogspot.com

Also on social media:

* Google+: http://gplus.to/kerlin
* Facebook: http://facebook.com/kerlin

Or there’s Google – stacks of articles – many to do with my work for the Gungahlin Community Council, going back to 2006.

And referencing another post on The RiotACT http://the-riotact.com/act-election-does-anyone-care/

My beer of choice is Guinness, or other dark, heavy beers when drinking local produce.
The Wig & Pen’s Velvet Cream Stout is delicious.
If these (or other small brewery beers) aren’t available, Cooper’s Pale Ale is next in line.

I appreciate a good home-brew, and enjoy single malt Scotch whisky or Irish whiskey with a small splash of water to help separate the flavours. I have also been known to drink quality vodka neat in the Russian fashion.

The complete list of candidates is at http://www.elections.act.gov.au/elections_and_voting/2012_act_legislative_assembly_election/2012_candidates which includes party contact details

Ungrouped candidates, including Pirate Party ACT candidates have their contact details here http://www.elections.act.gov.au/elections_and_voting/2012_act_legislative_assembly_election/2012_candidates/candidate_contact_information

The ACT Greens in the link you found have chosen to have extremely brief descriptions about their candidates.
You are correct in the Liberal Democrats only listing a 2008 candidate, and their contact email appears to be a personal yahoo account.
Bullet Train has listed their facebook page as their official candidate website on the elections ACT page.

Pirate Party ACT candidate into can be found at http://www.actpirates.org.au/index.php/candidates/

Glen Takkenberg
Pirate Party ACT for Ginninderra

I would have been rather surprised if you had said you hadn’t seen any information anywhere about Karl Maftoum (Labor)!

Best I’ve found so far is http://www.abc.net.au/elections/act/2012/

Click on your electorate for a short blurb on each candidate. Not much but best I’ve seen in one place.
