Two men have suffered serious injuries after a drunk driver, who was allegedly five times over the legal limit, left a path of destruction at Jerrabomberra yesterday afternoon (7 September).

Police will allege the 36-year-old man drove his Toyota SUV along Stella Place and hit a concrete letterbox, which was destroyed, before his vehicle continued into the path of a light pole and came to a stop.

He then allegedly reversed into a tree before entering Franklin Court, driving into the driveway of a house and striking the two men.

The older man, aged 73, received abdominal and shoulder injuries and the younger man, aged 35, suffered a serious leg injury. They were both treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Canberra Hospital where they remain in a stable condition.

The driver was breath tested at the scene and returned a positive reading. He was arrested and taken to Queanbeyan Police Station where he returned a positive reading of 0.272, which is more than five times the legal limit.

The man was charged with aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and driving with a high range prescribed concentration of alcohol.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Queanbeyan Local Court on 26 October.

Years ago, the Canberra Times used to print the names of everyone caught DUI. Now no-one, even the most egregious examples, ever gets named. Surely that is part of the process – informing the rest of us who are the anti-social ones, and also as a warning to others.

I once had a lady tell me that because I did not have a Drink Driving charge on my record, that I was “boring”.

Society in Canberra is pretty degenerate; degenerates do not view this kind of behaviour as abnormal.
