From Monday 5th of August to Saturday the 7th September, Civic Library will be exhibiting the works of Wiradjuri artist Kevin Gilbert.

On display will be a collection of Kevin’s works, which will include oil paintings, lino prints, poetry, manuscripts, political works and photographic murals, many of which were unseen before this year.

Kevin was one of the paramount Aboriginal artists of 20th century Australia, known best as an activist, artist, poet, printmaker and the first Aboriginal playwright and political writer to be published in Australia.

I Do Have a Belief II will highlight his written works, including the script of The Cherry Pickers, which Sydney Theatre Company toured internationally, along with his poems for children, political cartoons, video messages and photographs.

Through his role in establishing the Aboriginal Embassy in 1972 and its re-establishment on a permanent basis in 1992, Kevin Gilbert became a well-known Canberra identity.
