Five things to do around Canberra this weekend (13-15 January)

The cars may have driven away, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had around town this weekend. Movies for all ages are showing on big screens across the capital, and sport lovers can indulge in a day at the tennis on Saturday. Don’t forget it’s Friday the 13th tomorrow … and you can get superstitious about it at the National Portrait Gallery.

With a beautiful Lake Burley Griffin backdrop, the Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinemas provide the perfect Canberra outdoor event, with feature films lighting up a huge outdoor movie screen from dusk. Chill out before the movie with tasty food and frosty beverages from the licensed bar, while relaxing to sounds from the best of the Australian and New Zealand music scene and sets from exciting emerging local musicians. Every Sunday screening is a ‘Sundae Session’, with a dedicated live music event and free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for all! Take a picnic blanket or book a comfy bean lounger. Tickets can be purchased on their site, or if they don’t sell out (which they usually do) you can buy at the gate. Tonight’s flick is The Founder (selling fast), tomorrow’s is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (about to sell out) and Sunday’s is Trolls (selling fast).

Finding Dory – PIXARpalooza

When: 11am Fri | Where: National Film & Sound Archive, McCoy Circuit, Acton

This January school holidays families can enjoy the best classic films from Pixar Animations Studios in an imaginative and creative space at the National Film and Sound Archives. From adventures with Princess Merida in Brave, to swimming the seas with Nemo and Dory, you’ll meet characters and stories that excite and enchant. Today at 11am it’s Finding Nemo. Bookings can be made online.

Late Night Opening: Superstition

When: 5-8pm Fri | Where: National Portrait Gallery

For selected Fridays during January and February, the National Portrait Gallery will keep its doors open until 8pm. This Friday you can indulge in a bit of Friday the 13th superstition with a wonderful selection of music from DJ Mr Michael and accompanying caricatures drawn by Andrew Hore. This event is free, no bookings required. You can also catch the Popular Pet Show highlights tour at 7.00pm (exhibition ticket required).

East Hotel Canberra Challenger Finals

When: 9am Sat | Where: Canberra Tennis Centre, 3 Riggall Place, Canberra

The Canberra Challenger has enthralled spectators all week, and the final is this weekend. With a few matches still to be played between now and Saturday it’s anybody’s guess who will make it through, but you won’t want to miss this exciting day of pro tennis fun. Free Screening: Oddball

When: 3-4:30pm Sat | Where: National Portrait Gallery

Catch a free showing of the beautiful family movie OddBall – where an eccentric chicken farmer teams up with his granddaughter to train their mischievous dog, Oddball, in an effort to protect the local penguins from and save their seaside town. This is based on a true story and is rated G. Bookings not required.
