Free to air sports channel for Canberra?

The Australian reports that Ten has announced a free to air sports only channel to be operational in April next year.

Given the poor digital service our three regional commercial TV stations currently provide us – any chance that SC Ten will step up and give us this service at the same time?

AG Canberra, if your TV or STB supports an EPG (rather than just now and next), you can also get a couple of days info (note that sometimes SC10’s HD channel listing is wrong).

OK – so is there a place where I can see what is being shown on each channel each day? (like an expanded TV guide with more than the 5 lists that are currently published)

And I don’t care if it’s HD or SD – I just want to know if there’s something else on that I might want to watch…

try this http://canberra.iprime.com.au/depts/tv/?sem=google&KNC-Google or this http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/television/

Some of these issues were covered in my thinly veiled complaint about not getting the F1 live on Southern Cross Ten into Canberra…

I guess the only thing we can do is ring or write to the station expressing our desires (TV stations don’t seem to do email feedback, bless ’em).

my understanding (correct me if I am wrong) is that both Win and Prime have a lack of capacity to bring in a decent High Definition feed into the ACT, and whilst Southern Cross Ten (SCT) have the capacity to bring in a true high def feed in to the ACT, SCT don’t have the gear to splice in the local advertisements into the high def channel. Hence the lack of programming on SCT…..as no ads = no income.

All three stations can bring in HD to the ACT (WIN supposidly can’t offer a higher bandwidth version of what they have due to old links in the country for regional areas (or maybe it was Tasmania, I can’t remember)). Prime is actually based in the ACT for playout (same with SC10).

WIN and Prime show a far bit of HD (especially Prime who show the Seven HD multichannel service during the day and late at night) as they take simulcasts of programs that are in HD and SD (except on WIN for ACA and other shows that are shown at a different time to the Nine Network (excluding Nine HD content late at night)).

I know from Content and Technology magazine that both Prime and SC10 are upgrading their facilities so local adverts can be placed in.

There is also the matter of that the Prime View 1,2,3 channels rob available bandwidth on the digital tv transmission and means that a true high def Prime channel won’t happen any time soon.

Actually it’s about a couple of kilobits as they are just redirects to the SD channel (the same when HD is turned off when no HD content is on)

I also saw Conroy openly supporting the channel on Ten last night…..Any chance that he can come up with some cash (a la aggregation in the 80’s) to get these “regional” broadcasters the technology to make it happen?

Two chances – Buckleys and none. The reason – advertising. To set up this channel in Canberra would involve blocking all the Sydney ads and substituting local ones. The costs currently involved in relaying the main Ten station to Canberra would suddenly double and new full-time staff would have to be employed to provide the Canberra service. Given the penny pinching attitude of the Ten network and the small population of the local area it just won’t happen.

Gotta love half the cooked implementation of technology we get here in Canberra……..

one of my mates got all set up recently to watch live motorsport coverage on Ten HD, as advertised. Surprise, surprise, he got the digital demo. for about half an hour. He checked on a forum re the reason for the lack of fast cars, and found that ten hadn’t bothered to give the feed to canberra. Why have a digital channel if you don’t put anything of interest on it?
