Ghetto GPS Patent – where in Canberra will it warn of?

creative_canberran 10 January 2012 29

This week, Microsoft has been granted a patent for GPS mapping technology that can take, among other things, crime statistics into account when calculating a route.

Last week, someone posted an interesting question about jogging in Canberra late at night, so such a feature sounds useful. So rioters, what specific places/events in Canberra (other than Charnwood and Summernats) do you predict this technology would warn against?

wow

Canberra 4.6 crimes per 1000
Charnwood 2.6 crimes per 1000

That’s pretty impressive.

Yes – I was going to suggest they add it to an app which uses Facebook/etc… to detect where those little pr!cks are going out for the night so it could dynamically predict where the trouble would be on any given night.

Charnwood patrol zone: 2.6 crimes per 1000 people.

Fyshwick/Oaks Estate patrol zone: 187.7 crimes per 1000 people.

The number is obviously skewed by the fact that no one lives in Fyshwick, but Oaks Estate is still pretty dodgy. The Causeway is also a pretty sketchy hood.

& Banks/Conder is only 2.9 Dub, what suburb do you live in that is so pristine? (My bet is the Causway…..)

You’ve lost your bet, KB1971, look at how touchy you are getting, do you live in any of the suburbs mentioned by me? 🙂 I bet you do! LOL.

I live in Torrens, which is Woden, sure, last suburb before Tuggeranong “hood” area, but, as far as I can tell, we barely even have crimes, nice, quiet leafy streets.
Crime rate will jump if I decide to use a slingshot and fire at that massive vase in front of particular house on my street. 😀 Very tempted.

Yep I do, for 10 years in fact with no dramas 😉

Oh yess, that is awesome news!
My money will be on Tuggeranong, in particular ( multiple warnings and forced detour for) : Banks, Conder and that other suburb there (sorry, can’t remember the name). I wish I had a permit to blow them up. 🙂

Gordon would be the name you’re looking for.

What I’m wondering is why you want to blow up the suburbs of Lanyon?

I can’t separate the Tent Embassy, Gungharlem, Belcompton, Tuggers, Narabundah, Oaks Estate or Struggle Town.

I have the same reservations as Pork Hunt that any GPS with this software may meltdown as you drive past the Hilton.

I drove through Causeway once, it was like walking into a saloon and having the piano stop.

I wont be going back.

I dont think it’s a big issue here, when you use a GPS, you’re usually in the car – not walking. So unless we have an area with car jackings, the GPS would be kind of pointless.

I assume the technology would take into account the time of day.

Accroding to what I saw on Slashdot, the patent is targeted sepcifically at devices for people who are not in vehicles. Those who are on foot, in wheelchairs, riding bikes etc.

As for where it would warn about in Canberra, I would think that parliament house is the obvious nogo zone. It’s full of uneducated and violent transient blowins from interstate who have no hesitation in dumping on our community and generally causing unrest. I think I can truthfully say it’s the one area of Canberra I’ve only been to once in the 20+ years since it opened. What sensible person would want to go there and associate with those people?

Something that is interesting from the crime stats is that 15 of the 34 sexual offences committed during December 2011 were committed in the Chisholm/Gilmore/Richardson patrol sector. No other sector has anything like that number.

Interesting that Charnwood has relatively low crime rate.

It’s not so much that more crimes are committed in Charnwood, it’s just that the majority of the dumbest criminals seem to live there.

Whilst we are looking at the stats, the overall crime rate for the ACT is 4.6 crimes per 1000 population. If we assume that suburbs with rates higher than that are unsafe then the top contenders are:

Fyshwick/Oaks Estate 187.7
Civic 75.6
Tuggeranong Town Centre 41.5
Bonner/Ford 39.4
Woden Town Centre 30.4
Belconnen Town Centre 18.3
Braddon/Reid 9.5
Gungahlin Town Centre 9.3
Acton/Turner 6.2
Ainslie/Dickson 5.8
Barton/Deakin/Forest 5.6
Kambah 5.0

Pretty sure they’ve designed it to be used in cities like Los Angeles rather than sleepy old Canberra.

Interesting that Charnwood has relatively low crime rate. I have lived there in the past, and when I mention that to friends from the ‘inner south’ (what a wanky real estate branding attempt that is) they look horrified, but the stats show Charnwood to be more crime free!

Humble pie anyone – assuming those of you who bagged Charnwood subscribe to the reality based community?

Patent is a bit abstract but they would probably intend it for their smarphones which a lot of people use for cycling and walking directions.

The reason behind the Charnwood joke is because they have something like 60% public housing there. Personally I haven’t had a problem there, or anywhere really, except Wanniassa. At the school there I nearly had a chair thrown at me by a student, and we had 2 lockdowns in one month.
To be honest I feel like it wont do very well, have to wait and see I guess.
