Ghetto GPS Patent – where in Canberra will it warn of?

By creative_canberran - 10 January 2012 29

This week, Microsoft has been granted a patent for GPS mapping technology that can take, among other things, crime statistics into account when calculating a route.

Last week, someone posted an interesting question about jogging in Canberra late at night, so such a feature sounds useful. So rioters, what specific places/events in Canberra (other than Charnwood and Summernats) do you predict this technology would warn against?

What’s Your opinion?

Will it go into meltdown if you drive past the AMC?

I dont think it’s a big issue here, when you use a GPS, you’re usually in the car – not walking. So unless we have an area with car jackings, the GPS would be kind of pointless.

I assume the technology would take into account the time of day.

Patent is a bit abstract but they would probably intend it for their smarphones which a lot of people use for cycling and walking directions.

Charnwood patrol zone: 2.6 crimes per 1000 people.

Fyshwick/Oaks Estate patrol zone: 187.7 crimes per 1000 people.

The number is obviously skewed by the fact that no one lives in Fyshwick, but Oaks Estate is still pretty dodgy. The Causeway is also a pretty sketchy hood.

& Banks/Conder is only 2.9 Dub, what suburb do you live in that is so pristine? (My bet is the Causway…..)

The reason behind the Charnwood joke is because they have something like 60% public housing there. Personally I haven’t had a problem there, or anywhere really, except Wanniassa. At the school there I nearly had a chair thrown at me by a student, and we had 2 lockdowns in one month.
To be honest I feel like it wont do very well, have to wait and see I guess.

“I don’t believe it has the people in it it once did to make it one of the re occurring jokes here.”

The joke used to be about Melba when “Barringa” Gardens was in full swing. When they knocked the flats down it was rumored that everyone was moved to Charnwood. Funny whats funny.

I think you will find that Charnwood being the worst crime area in Canberra is a myth and that the inner north has the highest crime rates.

I agree with TheDancingDjinn …. I’ve never felt unsafe in Charnwood even late at night.

Charnwood, without question. Also the Tuggeranong Hyperdome (and indeed much of Tuggeranong itself).

I must have missed it twhen Charnwood was active hey – i Don’t live there but i do live near by and usually use their small shopping establishement to pick up last minute things i have forgotten or what not. All i have seen is old people, and some kids with their dads or more old people dressed nice and going to the club there… I don’t believe it has the people in it it once did to make it one of the re occurring jokes here. Where i grew up in Wanniassa it was super safe in the 90’s no worries what so ever – now i would carry a “ULLBE” if i had to walk the Wanniassa streets alone. Times change places change – once apon a time Spence was filled to brim of heroin addicts and dealers – now? Old people. Seems the shit is falling downward don’t you think? hehe

Canberra Hospital would be a no-go zone, if our local Neighbourhood Watch newsletter is anything to go by.

Oh yess, that is awesome news!
My money will be on Tuggeranong, in particular ( multiple warnings and forced detour for) : Banks, Conder and that other suburb there (sorry, can’t remember the name). I wish I had a permit to blow them up. 🙂
