One of our Ben’s has sent in a great pair of pictures of the new Bomber Command Memorial in the grounds of the War Memorial. The unusual perspective shot is courtesy of a friendship with the sculptor. I have to say that I view strategic air power (not to be confused with tactical air power) as one of the most useless, and murderous forms of war. But the young men who followed orders and climbed into those machines knowing the slim chances of eventual survival deserve respect and remembrance.

Here’s the view from a distance.

For anyone interested, the tower is 16.5m tall and there’s going to be a bit around the bottom with silhouettes of Bomber Command staff in steel and etches of the planes on a glass bit. I took someone to the War Memorial the other day and had a bit of a stickybeak and decided the tower possibly wasn’t finished yet since it didn’t look nearly tall enough.

Cluster bombing from B-52s is very, very accurate. The bombs are guaranteed to always hit the ground.
