indo cafe beef rendang

Many of you have been on my back to try out the Indo Cafe under The Waldorf so today I trotted down.

It’s the most hole in the wall take-away you’ll ever see. The tables and seating taking place almost entirely under the large wide eaves of the Waldorf.

Lunch is a $10 lunch box. For that you get the an entree, a main, rice, and a soft drink.

For the first time in this series it came in a brown paper bag (as opposed to a plastic bag) which I thought was cute.

They’re very friendly and super fast.

I went for the beef rendang, a lemon squash, and a corn fritter.

The corn fritter was inoffensive but the rendang was a tad disappointing.

The beef wasn’t at that “completely falling apart” stage a great rendang requires.

It was plenty tasty though. I’ll be going back to try more from the menu.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

Very pleased with the Indo. I go for the $10 box, entre, drink combo. Typically I have the sate chicken, the white curry or the rendang, all good, but I really enjoyed the Fried Chicken and Omelette combo last Friday. Excellent! With the fried onions of course! I sometimes go for the chilli, but I often find it knocks out my enjoyment of their other flavours. I agree that it’s not quite the same as it was a couple of years back, but overall, I can’t complain – it’s good value.

I really like Indo Cafe, it’s quick, convenient, and I think it tastes good.

White Curry, plain rice, fried onions and chilli – can’t beat it.

While the bean counters may not get exactly the same amount of food per dollar, Phat Duck is far superior IMO (please, please re-open).

There’s a hole in my heart (and stomach) left by the closure of the Duck. It was supposed to be temporary while the remedial works were happening, but still no sign of life.

Tell me about it! In my mind they’re waiting for both Bunda to be 100% finished and avoiding the hottest part of summer. Bunda St itself is supposed to be resurfaced in early March – and I remember them complaining way back in September that it got ridiculously hot in their kitchen. So even though I’m hopeful each Monday, I’m tipping mid-March for re-open!

I have had many meals at Indo and have found the quality to be very good!! Go the Gado Gado ! Good value.

Their Red Chicken Curry FTW!!!

I’ve argued with people who won’t hear a word of criticism about Indon – they even drive into Civic in their lunch break to take advantage of the “incredible value for money”.

It’s quite good when I’m in the mood to add extra chilli and blow my head off – but the food does sit in those trays for hours prior to sale.

Seeing that split container reminds me that you should also check out the lunch special at Delhi 6 — http://www.delhi6.com.au/ — on Childers St. Curry/rice/naan for $9.90; I like the beef vindaloo but the goat is a novelty for cheap lunchtime eats.

Yep, unfortunately ‘disappointing’ is the word I’d use to describe Indo these days. A few years ago it was a fantastic little spot but with the huge increase in popularity has come the inevitable drop in quality.
