It’s Official: The Raiders Are SO Awesome! (Dally M 2008)

Spitfire3 10 September 2008 8

The NRL’s highest individual honours were handed out last night, and yet again our little country town was found to be boxing above it’s weight.

Colin Best won Wing of the Year
Neil Henry won Coach of the Year
Alan Tongue won Lock of the Year

…and, proving that the nicest guys can sometimes finish first, Alan Tongue also won Captain of the Year!

(Details of non-Canberra recipients here)

Congratulations to Neil, Colin and Alan!

Neil and Colin are off to less-green pastures next year, but luckily for us Alan’s staying here in the capital.

If you haven’t heard of Alan Tongue before, you should do a little reading. You couldn’t ask for a tougher, fairer or nicer bloke. Canberra should be very, very proud of him.

Alan tongue. A champion and a gentleman.

In the past week there was also a do involving the captains of the teams in the top 8. Alan Tongue shared a taxi with Darren Lockyer, and said he felt like asking for Lockyer’s autograph. What a sweetheart.

Well done Raiders. When was the last time they picked up some many gongs at the Dally Ms? Let’s hope it adds to their finals momentum.

I like Tongue’s style. Apparently he negotiated his contract renewal by himself (ie no player manager was involved). He is a real asset to the team and to league in general.

There was also a nice profile on Alan T in the Big League magazine last week. This season isn’t over and I’m already keen to get into next season and see what Furner can produce with these players.

Just goes to show how good they are after losing their “Star Player”

Kudos to the Raiders for kicking absolute ar$e, and lifting after various off-field ‘incidents’. Be interested to see what they can manage in the coming weeks.

(Todd who?)

Ahh cool, Matty Orford won. He was my vote 🙂

That is fantastic news. Great publicity for the club and recognition of the great season they’ve had.

I was especially pleased for Tonguey: tough but clean and fair football is what the Raiders have always been about and he personifies those values completely. There is no doubt that he will be one of the great Raiders players, if he isn’t already so.

Campo should probably have won something, too. He got beaten to 5/8th of the year by Greg Inglis, but Inglis said in his acceptance speech that he thought Campo was going to take it out!
