Kagawa teriyaki chicken bento. $10 lunch review

Being a sucker for a sandwich board promising a sub $10 lunch Dickson’s Kagawa lured me in today.

I walked in the door at the dot of noon to find the place mostly empty, but not ready to do anything so crass as take my order.

After a couple of minutes playing around with a cash register terminal my simple order was taken.

And then I sat and waited.

15 minutes.

When it arrived it was pleasingly hefty but when I got it home I’ll confess to feeling disappointed.

Dry chicken and rice, some pickled vegetables, some lettuce, a pinch of noodly things.

The miso soup was nice but the shop selling packets is just next door, add boiling water for much the same effect.

There was nothing particularly bad about it, but there are a great number of much more interesting bento boxes going in Civic.

It should be said their menu does have much more interesting looking offerings for a few dollars more.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

That place traded under a different name when it first opened up some years back (“Meiji”, I think?). You could actually get semi-authentic Japanese food there. Then it changed names (and presumably ownership) a few times since and now what they sell it not even close to Japanese food.

I recommend their eat in dinner menu. Great place to go for sashimi when you’re too cheap to go to Iori

Yeah, but Iori has a genuine SUSHI CHEF (owner).
You can’t compare truffles against oranges.

I agree.

I’m pretty sure the staff were at least speaking japanese today.

Admittedly I haven’t tried their bento box offerings, but Kagawa’s dinner menu is the best value for money I have come across in Canberra.

BBQ fish head there is fantastic but they can be rather hit and miss I’ve found

They’re seaweed (yes, it looks like noodle, but it isn’t), probably from Fukushima. Hence the green tinge.

JB will soon turn into one of these…!
