UPDATED: Man arrested outside Parliament, charged with reckless threat to kill

11:00 am: The man arrested outside Parliament House last night and charged with possessing an offensive weapon with intent and reckless threat to kill a person has appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.

Yohanes Mekonnen was told he would be taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

“May I ask why is this necessary?” he said.

Special Magistrate Jane Campbell told him she had to be satisfied he was well enough to appear before the court.

Pleas have not been entered and bail was not applied for. He will appear before the courts again at a later date.


9:00 am: A man was arrested outside Parliament House last night (21 June). He has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon with intent and reckless threat to kill a person.

AFP Protective Service Officers were called to an incident at around 7:00 pm and detained the man before he was arrested by police and taken to the watch house.

The 22-year-old is due to face court this morning.
