A 51-year-old Belconnen man is assisting police with their enquiries after suspicious packages were found at the ACT Legislative Assembly in Civic today (Monday, July 8).

ACT Policing received the report of three suspicious packages containing a white powder around 11.10am.

Police responded, and cordoned off the area to support the ACT Fire and Rescue HAZMAT team’s response. Staff in the building were restricted from entering or leaving while the incident was being investigated.

Test results confirmed the material as benign and the ACT Legislative Assembly was re-opened about 2.30pm.

A further two packages are also believed to have been sent by the man to other addresses, with the material suspected to be benign.

Police enquiries are continuing.
