Choosing art for your home or office is more than just matching a painting to the curtains.
An artwork or sculpture can make a room feel bright and exciting or cool and calm. Art breathes life into a dull space.
But selecting the right piece can be a daunting exercise. So one Canberra artist is going above and beyond the palette to ensure her clients find a piece that best suits their style and budget.
Award-winning artist Margaret Dimoff combines her passion for art and love of interior decorating to help Canberrans design their perfect space.
She invites art lovers into her solo gallery in Grey Street, Deakin, where they can choose from an array of works before Margaret personally delivers them to their home or office so they can match their favourite to the decor.
“I take the paintings to people’s homes and they can choose the work they prefer,” Margaret said.
“I can help hang them, and swap and change the works around to see how they look in different rooms.
“They might want a big, bright red piece for their living area and a calming work in blue and green hues for their bedroom. It’s very important that an artwork complements its setting, so it’s best to set it in situ.”
Margaret gets a buzz out of seeing her works hanging in people’s homes and work spaces, and offers decorating advice to her customers.
“You know by the look on the client’s face when the perfect piece is hanging just where it belongs.”
Margaret’s award-winning gardens have inspired her creativity for more than 30 years and her love of flowers, plants and nature shines through in her spectacular abstracts.
Her paintings adorn the walls of homes, medical centres and office buildings throughout Canberra and beyond.
Margaret also operates her art studio from the gallery so visitors can see her at work.
“I enjoy painting in the gallery, and being able to stop what I’m doing and talk to people when they come in,” she said.
“People also love to watch an artist paint and to ask questions about their work.”
Margaret boasts the largest commercial art gallery in Canberra, with more than 400 paintings and about 100 pottery pieces on display.
Prior to opening her Canberra gallery in 2013, Margaret lived on a farm on the NSW south coast where she had two large workshops.
Before that, she lived and worked in Canberra and tended her huge multi-award-winning garden that was often open to the public during Floriade. She won the Garden of the Year two years in a row.
Margaret said although she missed her garden and farm, her life-long love of gardening inspired her abstract works.
She said there was something to suit every taste in her gallery – from her colourful large canvases to smaller paintings framed behind glass.
Margaret graduated from the Australian National University (ANU) in ceramics in 1983 and sculpture in 1992 before taking up painting.
Her works are all one-offs and priced at artist’s prices, rather than gallery prices. She has won countless awards for her works which have been displayed in galleries in Sydney, Melbourne and regional art galleries across NSW.
Margaret invites art lovers from all over Canberra to visit her gallery and choose something that suits their space. She’s also happy to take a look at photos of a client’s home or office, or even visit in person, to custom design a piece to suit their style.
She offers a no-obligation one-week free trial of artwork in your home, with free delivery to the Canberra area.
The Margaret Dimoff Art Gallery is open Friday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm or by appointment.
