Men Speak Out

By creative_canberran - 1 June 2011 10

Regular readers of The RiotACT may recall the recent string of controversial initiatives from student activists; indeed the Canberra Times brings word of a new shout fest coming next week. So it’s great then to give credit to a great cause from the Organisation of Critical Students*. This Wednesday, ANU Men Speak Out will see students gather to hear the men at ANU voice their concern for the issues affecting women. It’s been held in association with Slut-walk but has an altogether different, and arguably more constructive tone.

It’s an event at the grass roots level, with notions of respect and equality at its core. It’s not about shock value or quick slogans, but about fellow students actually confronting the issues, misconceptions and prejudices in society. It’s initiatives like this that can go a long way to shifting the culture on campus and beyond. So well done to them!

This event is a chance to show not all think like that, not all view women as potential, easy, quick lays.

I think of many women as (hopefully) potential, easy, quick lays. I enjoy sex, casual or otherwise. I don’t sexually assault women, and I don’t take a drunken mumble to be consent. Can you stop mixing up people who enjoy sex a lot with rapists?

The organizers of the event share the same sentiments as you. This event is about equality; equal opportunity, equal pay. Being involved in this campaign, I have been upset with how many men have felt uncomfortable with simply showing a morsel of support for women.

Just because you enjoy sex with multiple women does not mean that you are a bad guy, it just means that you like sex. Women like sex, too. This is about creating a culture that will empower men to stop a sexual assault if they see it, to support a female friend or relative if they get raped, and most importantly to never blame a woman for being raped. These are the same reasons that I helped to organise SlutWalk, which in fact had well over 200 participants. This can be proven by our manifesto.

Still, thanks for the positive review of our work.

And the Organisation is made up of Men and Women.

Thanks for the clarification. It seems the Organisation of Critical Students is, in fact, 29 university VIRGINS of mixed gender, attempting to get laid by burning bra’s in public. Good luck with that one 🙂

Hi Antagonist! I am not a virgin, but if I was I wouldn’t try to pick up women by burning bras. I just don’t see the logic in it. But congratulations on not only making a pathetic joke that stopped being funny after ‘Police Academy 3’, but also for revealing your own sexual insecurities. Like all people who question our motives and intentions, I encourage you to come to one of our meetings, they are held every Friday.

Hey Creative Canberran,

You know the member from OCS who came up with the ANU Men Speak Out campaign is a woman right? It’s the same woman who was the main organiser of SlutWalk.

You mad bro?

Article never claimed the organisers were different, in fact it even acknowledged that Men Speak Out is been held in association with SlutWalk.
Article made the point that the themes and approaches of the events themselves are different and gave credit to those who organised it.

Also, “you mad bro”… how old are you? Oh sorry… how old r u?

A lot of guys, perhaps a majority even at ANU have one thing in mind, heading to Mooseheads and finding the drunkest undergrads for a one nighter. That’s why sexual assault is such an issue at Canberra’s tertiary institutions.

Guys wanting lots of random sex is the cause of sexual assault at Canberra Uni’s?
Really?

Mr Evil 4:43 pm 01 Jun 11

I reckon if John XXIII College disappeared, a lot of issues on campus would be solved overnight!
