Regular readers of The RiotACT may recall the recent string of controversial initiatives from student activists; indeed the Canberra Times brings word of a new shout fest coming next week. So it’s great then to give credit to a great cause from the Organisation of Critical Students*. This Wednesday, ANU Men Speak Out will see students gather to hear the men at ANU voice their concern for the issues affecting women. It’s been held in association with Slut-walk but has an altogether different, and arguably more constructive tone.
It’s an event at the grass roots level, with notions of respect and equality at its core. It’s not about shock value or quick slogans, but about fellow students actually confronting the issues, misconceptions and prejudices in society. It’s initiatives like this that can go a long way to shifting the culture on campus and beyond. So well done to them!
