Police are seeing a massive jump in the number of motorbikes that are being stolen across the ACT.
ACT Policing said that while 98 motorcycles were reported stolen in 2022, that number increased to 189 in 2023. To date, in 2024, 90 motorbikes have been stolen.
The superintendent of road and proactive policing, Brian Diplock, said motorbikes were often easier to steal than other vehicles as most aren’t fitted with anti-theft technologies like immobilisers.
“Motorcycles are also easier to conceal in garages or on properties, which makes them harder for police to locate and return to their owners,” he said.
“Stolen cars are twice as likely to be recovered than stolen motorbikes.
“To better protect your bike, park it in a secure garage where possible. If not, attach it to an immovable object such as a pole.”
Police say a disc lock is an effective tool to help prevent thefts if a motorcycle can’t be parked securely.
“Some motorcycles can be hotwired, bypassing the need to steal the key,” Superintendent Diplock said.
“A disc brake lock is a deterrent to would-be-thieves because even if they do hotwire the vehicle, they can’t ride off with it.”
Earlier this year, Region reported that the average number of motorbikes reported stolen per month over 2023 was 16. But March 2024 more than doubled that figure as 36 were reported stolen.
At the time, it was understood that the spike was linked to one or two repeat offenders.
Meanwhile, an Apple AirTag helped ACT Policing recover 21 stolen e-bikes and electric scooters, which were found after the search of a home in Ngunnawal in December 2023.
To report a bike theft, contact ACT Policing on 131 444.
Police say that if your bike is stolen, provide a copy of the vehicle’s registration and VIN, as well as a photo of the bike or description available when reporting the matter.
