Further charges are expected after a Greenway man was arrested for allegedly causing a collision while going more than 200 km/h on Erindale Drive.

Police allege that at about 9:15 pm on Friday (21 June), a grey Volkswagen Arteon sedan and black Mitsubishi Lancer sedan collided on the Monash road near the intersection with Charleston Crescent.

Both cars had been travelling east at the time, with the Lancer then crashing into a red Jeep travelling in the opposite direction on Erindale Drive.

The two people inside the Lancer – a 45-year-old woman and 16-year-old boy – were treated on scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

The suspected driver of the Volkswagen, a 32-year-old Greenway man, was arrested a short time later.

He’s been charged with assaulting a frontline community service worker, not stopping/rendering assistance, and obstructing a territory official.

Investigations are ongoing and further charges are expected.

ACT Policing Major Collision Team Detective Sergeant Jonathon Turkich said this type of avoidable collision was all too common for police.

“Through the course of our investigation, we estimate the vehicle that caused this collision was travelling in excess of 200km/h at the time,” he said.

“This goes beyond the realms of ‘excessive speed’. We’re talking about downright stupidity.

“It is by sheer luck that this incident hasn’t led to yet another needless and completely avoidable death on our roads.”

Six people have been killed on Canberra’s roads so far this year – the most recent less than a week ago.
