The motorcyclist who died after receiving catastrophic injuries in a crash in northern Canberra this week had only moved to the ACT relatively recently, police said.

Around 5:10 pm on Tuesday (18 June), police arrived at a collision between a motorcycle and a light truck near the intersection of Southern Cross Drive and Beaurepaire Crescent in Holt.

ACT Road Policing’s Acting Inspector Travis Mills said the 47-year-old male motorcycle rider sustained “fairly catastrophic injuries” in the crash and was treated at the scene before being taken to Canberra Hospital, where he sadly died a short time later.

“At this particular stage, we are in conversation with the families. The next of kin resides in Far North Queensland,” he told media on Wednesday (19 June).

“Our enquiries in regards to where the motorcyclist was travelling to are ongoing at this time.”

The motorbike rider was the sixth person killed on Canberra’s roads this year. Acting Inspector Mills said by this time in 2023, there had only been three such fatalities.

“As a police officer, I’m concerned about any loss of lives on our roads,” he said.

“This is the fourth vulnerable road user that has lost their life on ACT roads this year. That is a concerning statistic, and it is worrying to say the least.”

He said the truck driver was currently assisting police with their enquiries, but he would not comment on the nature of those enquiries at this time.

“Our enquiries in the investigation are in the early stages. A brief will be prepared for the coroner and the courts in relation to that,” he said.

The acting inspector said the truck was a ‘tipper style’ light truck usually used for carting small goods and was registered in the ACT, but he was unsure whether the driver was from the Territory or not.

He urged people “to ride and drive to the conditions” and think about other road users.

Anyone who witnessed the Holt collision or who may have dash-cam footage of the crash has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting P2263637.

Tennis Canberra coach Alicia Celaya Jauregui was killed while riding her bike on Lady Denman Drive in March.

A flipped Toyota Camry was found in the middle of Adelaide Avenue in Yarralumla on 17 April, and a 15-year-old boy with critical injuries was found nearby. He was transported to hospital where he later died.

A 46-year-old male motorbike rider died after a single-vehicle crash on Brindabella Road on 21 April, and another was killed in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Sulwood and Athllon Drives on 23 May.

Journalists should really study statistics. The number of fstalities will vary from year to year and with these low numbers we have had recent years, it is inevitable that the number of fatalities sometimes goes up. Read “statistical significance” on wikipedia if interedted
However every accident with fatality is one too many. But to immediately blow it up in a headline is unnecessarily dramatic.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe zero road deaths is an achievable thing. You can reduce the risk, but complete freak accidents can and will still occur.

While it is always sad to read reports like this it was good to see the “woke” pronouns have been edited out of the initial article.

Maybe we need more speed cameras, more red light cameras and even more mobile detection cameras. All of these safety initiatives appear to be working.
