Music teachers/tutors

Evening all. I’m searching around (and it seems in vain) for a qualified AMEB teacher or tutor here in Canberra. I’ve Googled the holy crap out of the topic and it seems only eBay is selling “…affordable music teachers near you!”.

Specifically, I’m looking for someone who can take me through AMEB grading for guitar, be it a decent private tutor, high school music teacher looking for cash on the side or other.

Do you know someone? Are you someone? Do you know where I can find someone? I promise not to pay with drawings of arachnids.

My daughter’s teacher was Daniel McKay who also plays with Guitar Trek.

There are a few people in the Yellow pages.

Canberra Music Tuition and the Music Learning Centre are very good.

You may also like to investigate http://www.classicalguitarcanberra.org.au/wp/ (follow the tuition link – this lady is a great player and a lovely person)

Fair nuff – but I did say a place like Better Music…

Surely there are other places you can buy guitar stuff through?

You could always go into a place like Better Music (if they exist still) and look on their bulletin board or talk to the staff behind the counter to see if there are any of those people about.

With respect, I’d try to stay away from Better Music and their bulletin board. The blokes that work there are great and can be quite helpful, but they’re necessarily driven by personal and economic interests rather than providing the best advice/teaching contacts.

Yeah I was gonna say ANU School of Music too.

Luther, have you tried getting in touch with the Music Teachers Association?

The AMEB refers people to the Music Teachers Assoc to find a teacher usually. I know there was a Piano Teachers Association – perhaps there is a Guitar Teachers Association too? I’m thinking you want someone who is part of the Music Teachers Association.

Hey Luthor – thanks for that.

School of Music is the ANU School of Music (http://www.anu.edu.au/music/)

The jazz stream has an insanely good reputation (I couldn’t tell you anything about the classical mob – although I would assume that the more prestigious conservatoriums would up them for better teachers).

Look up ANU in the phone book – they have the School of Music. Lots of students there top up their Austudy with tutoring/teaching in order to make ends meet, and you have to actually be a pretty good musician to get into the School of Music so you know they can actually play.

Jim Jones – AMEB is the Australian Music Examinations Board, basically the formalised/standardised nationally recognised curriculum. Also, when you say “school of music”, which or what or who school of music?

The bellchambers school of music in Phillip.

Their contact details are in the phone book and they have very good teachers.

They should meet your needs.

I have absolutely no idea what AMEB is. Regardless, it’s a very good idea to get in touch with the school of music (either the jazz or classical streams, whatever floats your boat) and ask for their recommendations – this way you get the pick of the bunch of students/ex-students, whatever.

Alternatively, Canberra Music Tuition (54 Weedon Cl, Belconnen, ACT 2617
(02) 6251 4109?) has a good reputation and is quite professional. They’ve used a lot of ex-school of music bodies in the past.

drawings of arachnids. Bwa hahaha!

You may know this, but there’s no (as far as I’m aware) requirement that the teacher have any AMEB qualification/approval to take you through the grading stuff. More just you buy the books, learn the pieces, pay the money for the exam, they examine you, and if its above about grade 5 you have to also have done some musicianship (theory).
