Other shopping malls line up to put the boot into the Canberra Centre

The Canberra Times informs us that the other shopping malls in Canberra are kicking some easy goals on the back of the Canberra Centre’s Sunday Pay Parking:

Westfield shopping centres and The G in Gungahlin said they could not foresee it happening. The Tuggeranong Hyperdome did not comment on its plans.

The G centre manager, Julie Walker, said there was no need to raise its fees because it did not outsource its parking operations and was able to budget for it.

Yep I avoid Hibberson St when driving in Gungahlin. Closing it to cars would be a good idea but may turn the whole area into a ghost town like Garema Place on a Sunday afternoon.

It’s a frustrating drive through there anyway. Why anybody would choose to do so is beyond me.

How about a big canopy over Hibberson street and making the road a shared zone? Remove all the traffic controls except for parking and make motorists strictly liable for any incidents along it.

It was my understanding that the residents of Gungahlin expressed a clear preference for pedestrian traffic only in the marketplace precinct, which the ACT government then chose to disregard. I am willing to be corrected on this, however.

The open spaces between buildings are miserable in the colder or wetter months, but much, much nicer than one big, enclosed mall on warm, fine days.

Swings and roundabouts, I suppose.

Provision of some kind of shelter at some stage would be well received, I think.

If you don’t drive to the shops, and they offer free parking, then when you shop you are just subsidising other people’s parking. User pays I say!

I live in Gungahlin and believe the shops are poorly designed…

There is a major thoroughfare going between each shopping centre which the young Choccos in their foolysikmate Supras fang up and down with little disregard to those crossing the road.

The other issue I have is it is spread out – to go from say Medicare to Big W in winter means a 50 metre uncovered walk down through the icy winds. Which isn’t generally a problem, but if you are pushing a pram with a 1 year old and an infant in tow isn’t generally a pleasurable experience.

I do appreciate the free underground parking though. I wonder how long it will last.

So why not call the cops?

Is there aim with eggs better?

I was pretty unimpressed to have to pay for parking last Saturday night. While Saturday night is busy, I arrived after 9pm, and stayed less then 2 hours…

I’m hardly going to sit around Gungahlin for an extra hour waiting for the cops to arrive so I can point out a group of tards throwing waterbombs. It would have been a waste of their and my valuable time.

We had thought of getting a carton of eggs, but with my aim, I probably would have ended up making a mess of their neighbours units.

I’d rather get hit by a waterbomb than a fist from a booner

Personally I have never had a problem in Gungahlin. I think it is the perfect place in Canberra to go and chill out in the sun with a coffee on the weekend.

So make up a molotov cocktail and throw it back. That will shut them the f*** up!

As if Gungahlin Shops isn’t dodgey.

We were out that way a few weeks ago having a coffee at one of the cafes, and noticed some people get hit by waterbombs.
Upon further inspection we noticed there was a group of people throwing water bombs from their balconey at any peopele of foreign appearance that walked by.

Not sure if this link will work, but the waterbombs were coming from this balconey:

Meh I like the Gungahlin shops. The area has a nice vibe and no dodgyness like you get a Woden or Belco.

Interesting, i sort of get that feeling too. Maybe it is just because everything is newer in Gungahlin. My biggest complaint with the Gungahlin shops is the underground carpark at the G (under coles). There’s always a sewage smell down there, and the pipes on the roof have a tendency to leak.

The shops are a poorly planned and executed joke anyway.

If parking for free, underground, getting out of your car and walking to an elevator no more than 20 m away that spits you out in the middle of your chosen mall, then I guess you are right.

Oh oh, what about parking in another free car park and walking 2 to 5 minutes to get in your marketplace – hangon, I have another….Catch a bus and arrive at the doorstep of the shopping precinct.

Sounds like any other shopping experience to me.

Certainly seems to be poorly planned to me /sarcasm

Any chance to bash Gunghalin eh ?

Well well well… Seems like I wasn’t alone in voting with my feet.

And it’s not just Sundays, but also Saturdays.
$1.80 for just a quick snuck in to the shops is a bit steep. And you pay much more for a typical shopping visit of 3 hours.

Canberra Centre has to realise that those people who have to drive a car to get to their place live that much farther away from Civc, and are more than likely to be that much closer to alternative shopping centres such as Belconnen Mall and G Centre. Slap them with a parking fee on a weekend and they’ll take their business elsewhere.

Suggest you get rid of it.

Parking in Gungahlin is free. If they charged, NOBODY would shop there.

The shops are a poorly planned and executed joke anyway.
