Not sure if there is such a thing as a special firefighting helicopter, at least, one designed from the outset as one. The AirCranes like Elvis sure weren’t, in fact they were designed more for starting fires until someone thankfully had the idea to design a tank for them. Most of the ones we rely on are just multi purpose choppers fitted with tanks.

Watching a fire from up-close during 3 weeks in September, I would say the number of runs I saw by helicopters-with-tanks were outnumbered by a factor of 10 by the number of runs by anychoppers carrying buckets.

Additionally, I would say my extremely low desire to have anythying to do with choppers is vastly underweighed by my infinitesimally low desire to have anything to do with a chopper carrying a half-ton pendulum 100m below it. My mind boggles that anybody would do it.

Not all aero medical choppers do it, but so long as the kit is available and the pilot certified they can. SouthCare has its own bambi bucket, a sling certified pilot and is contracted for fire fighting. Does a pretty good job too.

And even if it’s not directly involved in suppression, people get injured in fires, so you’d want it free for it’s primary purpose, like last year when it had to take the overrun firefighter from Gundaroo to Concord.

I suppose we could have left him to die of his burns in garema place in front of a public audience, but I think we all might prefer living in a society where care is given to all regardless of what they’re suspected of.

No need to be a drama queen. Was simply alluding to the irony that a firebug should require the use of something used to put out fires. (They’ve got 4 choppers plus Southcare over at Hume today so not legitimately suggesting it created a capability gap).

They do double. If they have a hook in their belly, they can carry water.

The thing that lots of us can’t help but notice is that a disproportionate amount of social resources are consumed by many of the least deserving. Some people just make it their life goal to try to be a drain on society.
There are givers and takers.

Can’t Woden hospital treat burns ?

Depends upon whether you want to pay to have a specialist team, no doubt costing a few $m per year at Canberra Hospital to service a handful of serious burns each year and doing SFA the rest of the time.

I hear they caught someone and the dickhead burnt himself, so they flew him to a Sydney hospital for treatment….. wtf

Serious burns go to Concord (possibly another Sydney hospital too).

Yep, Concord and Royal North Shore are the two I’ve heard. I’m not sure what’s the difference and what determines which you go to.

One presumes he was choppered to Sydney, which is a great use of aerial resources on a high fire danger day.

ACT Rural Fire Service have knocked down the grass fire
Is that a technical term, similar to “under control”, or “contained”?

Because the word isn’t supposed to be “extinguish”, as they are still there…
to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

Let me go knock down my BBQ and my gas cook top.
… That doesn’t sound right.

Sex ed time: When you knock down a girl she usually gets knocked up.

‘Knock down’ is a technical term used around the world by fire services, basically means reducing heat/flame using retardants. When you see the fire hoses hitting the edge of a fire, that’s knock down, but the process of extinguishing a fire goes through several stages, from knock down to mop up.

At least, that’s what I remember from my days in the RFS.

“The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious.”
And I thought fires were a naturally occurring phenomenon, not requiring any form of suspicious activity to ignite. I guess I was wrong.

Looks like Mr Insadent has been allowed back at a keyboard.
