Police Wrap – 12 June

By johnboy - 12 June 2009 16

1. Liquor store standover arrest:

ACT Policing yesterday (June 11) arrested a young male person after a search warrant executed on a North Canberra residence yesterday.

Detectives from the Belconnen team of the Territory Investigations Group had been investigating an incident at the Woolworths Liquor Store on Saturday, May 16, in which a group of three males of Pacific Islander appearance had entered the Woolworths Liquor Store in Belconnen.

In the incident which followed, the cashier was threatened and cut on the arm, back and neck with a broken bottle. Items from the store were also stolen.

On May 22, a 17-year-old male was arrested and charged in relation to the incident. He will appear in court again on June 16. A vehicle and items of forensic evidence have been seized by police.

Police will allege that the 17-year-old New Zealand citizen arrested yesterday was the main offender in the incident and he will appear before the ACT Childrens Court today charged with Aggravated Robbery and Intentionally Inflict Grievous Bodily Harm.

Police investigations into the matter are continuing with further charges pending.

What the hell do you do with a “child” who goes out with a gang of mates and actually slashes someone behind a shop counter with a broken bottle? What is going to deter someone like that?

Get of their back ant ….. they had a rough up bringing and don’t know any better. Apparently these people did have any exposure to “normal” society and were unable to make choices for themselves !!??

If they are citizens of another country and they commit a crime on our shores then they should be locked up and then deported with a crimminal record.

But not for people who marry their cousins. that would be no fun.

Chopper 3:44 pm 12 Jun 09

well yes i believe there should be a death penalty for ALL sex offenders, kid killers and rapists.

So neither the jail nor the punishment will deter anyone from crime, especially people who are brought up around crime – they dont know any better.. instead its up to the individual and the community to help others less fortunate.

That sounds like a great argument for a death penalty if you ask me.

So you suggest first offenders are sent to jail then weeziepops? A court should always try help someone before sentencing them to jail as jail will just turn them into Matt Massey.. so you decide more Massey’s or more good behaviour bonds.. I mean why send 17-18 year olds to jail to associate with Massey’s, Scott’s, Eastman’s etc. I mean you can carry on all you want about the AMC it was never going to be an 1800s gaol where you walk around ball and chain.. so people need to get over that its the 21st century and if you honestly think its more of a hotel than a jail i suggest you spend 3-6 months in there and see if you feel the same. Massey use to get out of BRC which was a hell hole.. 50degree cells in summer, full concrete yards i mean this dirty hole was built in the 70s yet Matt would continue to get out of or break out of BRC and commit more serious offences..
So neither the jail nor the punishment will deter anyone from crime, especially people who are brought up around crime – they dont know any better.. instead its up to the individual and the community to help others less fortunate.

Good to hear of a success on the part of the po-leece, but I always suspect that “young offenders” get little more than a slap on the wrist (whether that be here or in NZ).
