A man and a woman remain in custody this morning after an incident earlier today (Saturday, July 30) in which they allegedly assaulted a police officer.
The officer sustained a chipped tooth, a bleeding nose and facial scratches as a result of the attack.
The incident occurred around 4.15am today when members of the ACT Policing City Beats Team intervened in a disturbance outside the London Burgers and Beers Café Bar in Civic, in which one man was seen punching the window glass of the business premises.
When police approached the group of four people and sought to move them on, the alleged offender – an 18-year-old man from Page – lashed out and punched an officer in the face. Although he was then restrained, he remained extremely aggressive, swearing and violently resisting arrest.
While the alleged offender was being held, another member of the group, a 20-year-old woman from Reid, then attempted to intervene and kicked the arresting officer.
The offending pair were taken into custody and conveyed to the ACT Watch House, where they face a range of charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, resist arrest and causing harm to a Commonwealth official. Subsequent enquiries revealed the woman is on bail for previous offences in December last year, in which she assaulted police.
