Brace yourselves, Canberra, this week is going to be heavy! Hardcore, metal, emo and punk are set to take over the stages at Transit and The Basement, creating an impromptu haven for those who like their music on the edgier side.

Reactions play at Transit Bar on Wednesday night, with support from locals Elk Locker. Innaxis and Earth Rot play on Thursday and Friday respectively, while I Exist and Mental Cavity take to the stage on Saturday.

The perfect antidote, if you need it, is to catch the hero of the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony, Christine Anu, on Thursday performing the songs of legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin at the Southern Cross Club in Woden.

Local artists are also taking to the stage this week, with Old Canberra Inn’s CBR Folk & Roots Jam acting like a mini festival for local songwriters. This week’s Crop Up Sessions feature soulful and experimental pop from Shoeb Ahmad and Groovy Daughter.

Scene diehards won’t want to miss the first show in the Under The Yellow Lamp series. Originally envisioned as a way of immortalising acts that graced The Phoenix’s stage in recent years, these shows are set to be recorded and pressed to vinyl for posterity. Catch TV Colours, Dog Name, The Touch Moves and Powder Blue at The Polo on Saturday.

La Dispute are heading to The Basement on Tuesday night for your mid-week music fix and ‘Late Nights’ singer Carmouflage Rose makes his way to UC Hub on Saturday night.
