Classical music comes to the fore in Canberra this week with a host of musical offerings across the spectrum of ‘art music’. On Thursday, the National Portrait Gallery will fill with the sounds of CSO’s Artist in Focus oboeist Diana Doherty. It’s the perfect match of two iconic Canberra institutions, and the program itself features a range of works from Australian composers including a premiere from Indigenous composer and opera singer Deborah Cheetham AO.

On Monday, one of the world’s most instantly recognisable classical music artists David Helfcott takes to the stage at Llewellyn Hall. This special afternoon recital forms part of the Lived Experience Showcase 2019, highlighting individuals that draw on lived experiences to challenge systems, often in unconventional ways.

Hope Wilkins is a singer-songwriter on the rise, and she’s launching her second single ‘Unstable’ this Friday at the Polo. Hope is fast making a name for herself with sophisticated, captivating songwriting in a similar vein to Angie McMahon or Julien Baker.

Canberra’s own Sugar³ are gearing up for Saturday night when they launch their new single, the ridiculously catchy ‘925’. Get along early to see some of the capital’s best-emerging talent in Deputy Chief Wardens and Learner’s Permit at this all-ages show.
