Six charged over alleged Bimberi escape attempt in August

Six teenagers have been charged by ACT Policing after they allegedly tried to escape from the Bimberi Youth Justice Centre in August.

During the riot, seven staff were taken to hospital and police were called to Bimberi as detainees allegedly tried to steal keys from staff members.

Police secured the centre in under an hour after arriving at about 7:00 pm on 26 August following reports of a disturbance involving detainees.

The six teenagers, all male, have been charged with a suite of offences including assault, conspiracy to escape, aggravated robbery, possess offensive weapon, obstruct territory official, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, affray, and possess stolen property.

One has already appeared before court while five others will face the ACT Children’s Court in December 2019 and February 2020.
