Email tree: for instance, I could point out that there was a lot of discussion here a few weeks back about library services (Griffith in particular), and I could mention that the ACT library service is now conducting a survey on possibly reduced hours at some other libraries at this location:

And then suggest that anyone interested not only does the survey themselves, but emails the link to half-dozen other people they know…
Voila – email tree.

hehe the irony being that “mail list” is also an American term for simple American folk.

Why you would use a “tree” system for sending out emails is beyond me. As far as I’m aware, a phone tree is as Sammy describes, but the idea behind that is that nobody has to spend several hours calling everyone, but it takes a personthe same amount of time to email one person as it does one thousand people, and those thousand people all get the message at roughly the same time, instead of waiting for the message to be passed down the chain…

It reminds me of the person who designed a pretty picture in MS paint, pasted into a word document, printed it out, and then took a digital photo of it so that they could put it on their website.

So an “email tree” is a mail list?

I’m more interested in the phone tree. Here is how I imagine it works:

Headquarters phones persons 1 and 2, informing them of the current conditions.

Person 1 then phones persons 1.1 and 1.2 and informs them of the same information.

At the same time, person 2 is phoning and informing persons 2.1 and 2.2 of the information.

This continues down the pyramid. Problems would arise if a step couldn’t be made. Then the whole thing falls in a heap.

Ok, not such a good idea after all.

An email tree is a syndicated email announcement sent automatically from random exchange to a group users who have subscribed or been added to said list.

Simple American terms for simple American folks.

I don’t know, my “shoe trees” are made of wood, and my feet feel like they’re on fire…
