So who’s your favourite… Hairdresser?

By johnboy - 24 March 2007 33

Continuing our semi-regular (that is to say not regular at all) series of favourite things in Canberra…

One for the ladies (and the more metro blokes we suppose), who do you think is the best hairdresser in town, and why?

What’s Your opinion?

I had my last hair cut on the night of my birthday in April, mrs wishuwell had been nagging and I’d been refusing for months. So in front of my friends she announced that she had arranged something special for my birthday as she handcuffed me to a chair. Cue music, onto the back deck struts a tall blond in heels and ankle length leather coat (yippie stripper/lap dancer). Off comes the coat (no sexy clothes underneath), out comes the scissors, snip goes the hair. Outmanouvered again by clever wifey.

The best hairdresser in canberra is Samantha at barton.
If you havent all ready heard!
She would have to be the most talked about hairdresser in canberra.
She works from her home salon in Barton, which yes i know home salons make alot of peolpe think twice, but she has done it and well might i add.
She is a Goldwell salon, which i am in love with the shampoo and con.
she is so much cheaper than salons e.g $140 for half head of foils, toner, cut.

Not sure what else to say other then you have to go to her if you are not happy with your hairdresser.
Thats if you can get in. Her no# 0423279620

Hi Samantha, welcome to the RiotAct

I was thinking the exact same thing!

Q Hair at Ainslie. They are the best salon I’ve ever found. Great cuts, reasonable prices and good colourists. Plus, they’re all really nice people.

That’s important when someone is holding an instrument for spraying hot water right near your face.

+2. Maddie and her staff are all great. As a consumer (not a hairdresser by any means – I can barely shave properly with an electric razor), I’d have to agree with hairdresser28. Salons are places where people have to make a living. A good hairdresser is like a good mechanic. Once you’ve found one, you keep them, and part of that is the balance between what you pay and what you get in terms of the quality of service.

Some people don’t care as much as others about their haircuts. We’re not all fashionistas, at least not anymore. Maybe this discussion should make a distinction between cheap and cheerful on the one hand, and stylists on the other, so those of you who think you ought to be able to get a haircut for less than $25 can talk to each other and leave the rest of us alone.

Well I like my hair done by a good hair stylist, and you need not pay big dollars, sometimes if I’m in Sydney I go to a Chinese lady (Lilly) opposite central railway station, who only charges $15.00 for shoulder length hair cuts, or Q hair in Ainslie, I like Molly to do my hair at Q,as she is a great hair stylist, but to get a cheap colour (Streaks) CIT Reid, they do a good job, if you can’t get in there I recommend Capital hairdressing Academy, and have qualified hairdressers there also at cheaper rates, you would be the guinea pig for students under supervision, I have never had a problem with them.

can i just comment on alot of the posts above and say that as a hairdresser i am deeply offended and seriously over people being so tight about hair. yes im sure once upon a time haircuts nd colors were alot cheaper, but so was just about everything. when you get a hair cut or color or any service in a salon youm are paying to sit in that chair. you are paying to use the service of a persons skills who has taken four years of training and for the costs of the business eg. rent, electricity, products and wages. if you are paying over 70 $ for a haircut its generally because the salon you are visiting is one which has highly qualified staff, is popular, does a good job or is in a shoping center. if this price offends you DONT GO THERE. if you can not ‘justify’ paying good money for a good service, GO TO JUST CUTS and get over it when you get a bad cut because 70 + is what a good cut costs.
again if the price offends, fine. but please do not offend myself ( a hairdresser) or anyone else by undervaluing the work that we work hard to do well. hairdressing is not charity work, and alot of people need to accept that the prices ARE actually justifyable to make any sort of profit from our industry. if you cant justify spend X amount- dont, good but dont disrespect me or other people in the industry by saying that its a rip off, because just cuts is just around the corner.

If you don’t want anything too fancy-schmancy, I’ve never had a problem with John Brennan Hair at Belco (the one near Westpac). Something like $35 for a women’s cut.

I had an epic failure of a haircut there 2 weeks ago that resulted in many frustrated mornings trying to get it to sit right- never going there again. That was my last el cheapo haircut- I see why it’s worth paying $75 now.

The Edge at O’Connor has restored my locks to something I feel proud leaving the house with so I will be going there from now on.

I love my local Bold Hair in scullin Claire has cut my very unruly thick curly locks for 5 or 6 years now and it’s never looked better, She is pretty good with pricing too, Discounts for pensioners.

For what it’s worth, I concur that EPIC at Woden is a rip-off.
Taken my daughter twice for a style, the second time we were charged more than double the first with no reason other than ‘that’s what it costs’.

Thumper 7:54 am 06 Aug 07

I couldn’t care less. As long as it’s $20 or less.

Besides, even that is a rip off given that they just shear me 🙂

I reckon the BEST Hair salon is got to be ‘HAIR NITESH’ in Belconnen!! Too good! Friendly service, stylish retro-modern set, exceptionally relaxing atmosphere and of course the finest barbers in town!

Book now! Satisfaction Guaranteed! U won’t regret it!

I love Josie who used to work at THE but now works for herself. Wouldn’t let anyone else touch my hair and her prices are better than THE too. Calls herself Mobile Makeover. I think you will find her in the yellow pages.
