An 18-year-old male will face the ACT Magistrates Court today after he stole a car from a Mawson home and subsequently crashed the vehicle hours later.

Around 5:30 pm on Sunday night (7 October), police responded to a report of a burglary in Mawson, with numerous items stolen including a white Kia Picanto station wagon.

Throughout Sunday evening, police observed the Kia Picanto bearing ACT registration YAU40P in Mawson, Gowrie and Isabella Plains. On each occasion, the car was being driven at high speeds while trying to avoid police.

Around 11:30 pm, police saw the Kia Picanto had collided with a wooden bollard in the carpark of the Calwell Neighbourhood Oval and the driver was fleeing on foot.

With the help of a police dog named Axe, police located the teenager hiding in the backyard of a Calwell home.

He has been charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, possessing stolen property, driving with a prescribed drug in oral fluid, aggravated dangerous driving, using a vehicle without required number plates and unaccompanied learner driver.

Police will oppose bail.

Police are urging anyone who may have any information or dash-cam footage that could assist police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
