The male rider has collided with a fence whilst travelling southbound on Tharwa Drive.

How many k’s is it from Lanyon Homestead to the Bridge ? So the m/c rider skipped around a couple of barriers to head down to the closed bridge…I assume.

Bet the last thing he expected to come across was a friggin fence across the road.

No warnings for the fence was there ? Just a warning that the bridge was closed.

Yes I s’pose he shouldn’t have gone down there as he obviously wasn’t ‘homestead traffic only’.
But knowing the amount of idiot riders/drivers in Canberra, did the powers that be actually think sticking a fence across the road with no warnings was a good idea ??

There is signage at several intersections along Tharwa Drive warning that the Bridge is closed. At the last intersection there was a sign clearly stating Lanyon Homestead access only, Bridge closed. I would have thought it was adequately signed – certainly clear in daylight.

Maybe he was going too fast to read them…

I live down near Lanyon Homestead.

These have been in position for a couple of weeks

That signage is yellow with black writing.

An electronic sign has now been added.past the final intersection.

I expect he had previously just gone around the barriers and down the road (I know I did several times on one of the previous closures, as did the google street view car)

Absolute gold… you’d think that with a camera on the roof recording where you’re going you’d want to avoid doing things which are not entirely legal…

Rumour has it he was a street speedster from way back, and that the accident occurred on the high side of 160km/h.

Very sad.

Local rumour from residents says that there was not much signage at all. Even doing to the speed limit of 100kph on that road a sudden surprise of a gate where there didnt used to be a gate would result in a nasty and very hasty attempt at stopping.

Best not to speculate on what happened. Only the dead man knows for sure.

I expect he had previously just gone around the barriers and down the road (I know I did several times on one of the previous closures, as did the google street view car), and this time was not expecting there to be a fence/gate closed across the road.

Very sad for the family, can only hope it was no one I know.

Fence is there for people who don’t spot the enormous plastic barriers on the road.

Darwin win.

The fence is right after the bend near the Lanyon driveway. If the rider was speeding and missed the warning signs, there wouldn’t have been too much much time to react…

Tharwa Bridge is closed again

Why was there a fence on Tharwa Drive?
