This was the best year ever

By johnboy - 14 December 2013 9

Far too often crap for brains types try to hark on about how the old ways were best and call for a return to yesterday.

Think Progress has a refreshing seasonal story on why the year just gone was the best one that ever was.

Which is no excuse not to try and do better here in Canberra.

Just to say that with trial and error we can make things better. And all those who say otherwise should be ignored.

What’s Your opinion?

Well the election turned out pretty well, so I’d have to agree. Best year ever

In a similar vein, this is a great data visualisation, produced by the BBC a couple of years ago:

Hans Rosling’s 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes – The Joy of Stats – BBC Four

I suspect “Bad Parking” was intentionally left out of that article because it completely disproved the authors entire premise.

I think this is all well and good, but I wouldn’t like to be trying to sell this happyspace to a woman in the DRC, or a gay man in India … rather than rest on some kind of dubious laurel, we should be redoubling our efforts to counter discrimination and violence (including no fat shaming and no slut shaming on the home front).

Very good. Thanks for posting that JB.

There’s still too much nastiness in the world and progress is always too slow, but it’s good to know that we’re making headway. All the more reason to work on speeding things up.

There are a great number of people on this site that could do with being a bit nicer. There is such a thing as being able to debate without getting into insults and comments such as “you have no idea what you are talking about” without actually reading what other people are saying.

People just resort to trying to insult to get their point across, I have been guilty of it and I try not to do it but geez sometimes its hard.

Thanks for that.

It is too easy to become depressed about certain new stories, and the daily reportage gives the idea that the world is a violent and irrational place.

But please, on a local level, keep writing stories like the one about a Molotov cocktail being lobbed into the Subway. That was gold.

Nostalgia aint what it used to be !

Indeed – nostalgia tends to be selective. This piece might also make interesting reading for people who are too young to know any different, and who think that the world has been stuffed up by preceding generations.
