Sober…as in the TOOL song Sober?? Actually, TOOL tickets cost me around $130 last time around now that I think about it…still cheaper than Pink.

this is an argument that could be had about any band or musician because its all completely subjective and down to individuals tastes.
The fact remains that ticket prices in general are sky-high (I havent been to a concert in the last three years that has cost me less than $99 for a ticket, and many have cost 20 or 30 dollars more than that) and only presale tickets and seats sold by premium seating suppliers such as preferredseating.com.au) are asking stupid amounts for the Funhouse tour.

But for those who think that ‘puts on one hell of a show’ means alot of lights and costumes but awful music / singing please take a few minutes out to view:

You need to get out more.

If I was a big enough fan I would pay that to see her no doubt. You might starve for a couple of weeks but you get to see someone you idolise, I can relate to that. Although I still think it’s mean to charge that much given her target audience. At least she’s ensuring her die-hard fans will be the ones showing up I guess.

I understand that the high prices are a result of several things, exchange rate, the high price of touring to Australia having to transport a big stage show and crew here etc.

Canberra wasn’t initially in the tour plan though was it? I’m sure she’s sold pretty well everywhere else as far as tickets go (possibly even sold out) and has put on extra shows, so Pink and the touring company are already making a whole bunch of extra money not factored into their initial schedule.

If you buy tickets I’m sure you’ll have a great night. A mate of mine saw her at the Metro in Sydney when she was doing the promo for this album/tour, whatever it was. Tickets were cheap and without all the flashy effects, just Pink and her band, he said the show was brilliant. She was singing in the crowd, and dancing on the back bar, at one point she jumped off the bar and he caught her. That’s pretty cool and I think shows she can put on a value for money performance. It’s relative though, how much you like her as to how much money you have to spend…

Having listened to some of my daughters Pink albums, they certainly are a bit more intelligent than your average middle of the road pop pap, the sort of stuff your Titney’s and that “Lady Gag Me”, or whatever she’s called, oh not forgetting the Pussycat strippers, but Pink’s music is still too pop for me.

I have been to previous pink concerts and I would say that her audience was made up of a lot of older people. Not primarily teens.

Also, regarding tonka’s point I think Pink would be able to make enough cash selling her music in whatever format, downloads, ringtones, CDs, DVD’s and let’s not forget big fat royalty checks for all the airplay. I think you’ll find that most of the mainstream artists are still doing more than okay.

Cd sales account for bugger all these days. The album as a platform for selling music is dying rapidly. People are moving much more towards individual songs they can buy for $2 or whatever (when they buy it at all – which is becoming increasingly rare).

That’s why people tour so much and charge so much money for it. Touring and merchandise is the only way to really make money from writing/selling music these days. Artists get bugger all for radio play, licensing etc

It’s no coincidence that radiohead sold their latest effort away for bugger all. CD/album sales have gone to hell over the last few years.

The next thing that is happening is artists touring on a classic album. I.e.- band X will tour and play their whole classic album X from start to finish. Recently we’ve seen Iron Maiden and Helmet do variations on it it and I understand that a lot of older bands overseas are making good money this way. I’ve heard there will be a few coming to Oz with this type of packeage over the next year.

She’s been around for a while Jim, and had a few hit albums now. Honestly – can’t stand the electro-pop stuff, but a lot of Pink’s music is just wonderful. On one of her albums, she sings a duet with her Dad – apparently as a young girl she used to go around with her Dad singing to Vietnam Vets; it’s really beautiful. She can really sing.

Actually Jim, you might be interested to know that Pink’s first top 10 single came out around 10 years ago, and she’s been fairly steady in the popularity stakes since then. I would suggest that she’s endured beyond flavour of the month.

Have you seen both in concert?? I have seen both in concert – completely different genres, completely different audience – but both absolutely excellent in their own right. I would suggest that anybody sledging Pink’s ability as a live singer/performer has never seen her live. I have seen numerous concerts over the years, and I would put Pink up in my top 10. I won’t pay $180.00 – the tickets will be $140.00 and whilst still bloody expensive, still cheaper than driving to Sydney and paying for accommodation etc… AIS is quite an intimate venue (by comparison) and so every seat is virtually ‘premium’. I wish it were cheaper, but I guess that is supply/demand (I wish houses were cheaper in Canberra too). As for bagging out Pink personally for being greedy – I suggest that she (like most artists) probably has no idea what the tickets cost – not her job!!

I wonder how much someone who doesn’t have writing credits for the songs they perform/own their publishing rights gets? Maybe that’s an excuse for high ticket prices?

The reasoning behind this; on much smaller stages a bad but reasonably popular originals band will always get paid much less than a straight out bad covers band.

The whole thing that bugs me about people doing this sort of stuff is that these socalled ‘artists’ sell millions of albums/singles along with associated merchandise, and then they crap on their millions of fans by charging them up the date for tickets.

They shouldn’t forget who put them where they are.

$180 is steep and you don’t want to go alone, so you have to find someone else who has $180 spare… I do love Pink, but I couldn’t spend that much money. The tickets may come down in price though. When Tori Amos was in town the tickets started out expensive and then came down in price closer to the concert date (it was a while ago now, start of last year maybe?) Pink is a bit more popular than Tori Amos is now though, so I dunno.

Hey, did anyone go to the Black Crowes concert where like only a couple of hundred fans came and loads of people were walking out? By the end what was left of the crowd just all pressed against the stage barely making a 3 man deep ring around it within the huge theatre. I felt embarrised for the Black Crowes as they must have thought, ‘crap, we must suck’ it was after the lead singer was dumped by Goldie Hawn’s daughter too, the poor bloke.

exactly. the only tickets i was able to get the retarded ticketek site to offer me when i tried for sydney shows were the $100 ones – as in back row). the canberra tickets (as in $140) are about $20 more than i expected them to be. i got $20 to spare so i am going (if i can get tickets tomorrow! praying to the ticket gods!). it would have cost me more in petrol, accommodation and other costs to haul arse to sydney – for much MUCH worse seats – so i’m laughing!

i went to one of the pink canberra shows in 2007 too – and it was a blast.

The cheapest Sydney tickets were $100 (when they were available)… and that’s in a MUCH bigger venue. The AIS is really a small, “intimate” venue by comparison and as such every seat there is a better seat than the $100 seats in Sydney.

$$ sucks, but when you factor in the cost of setting up a show in a venue where you can sell 1/4 the number of tickets… it’s going to be more dear.

Saw here in 2007, and it was awesome. Already bought tickets for wife and I to see here in Sydney… but those are now going to be sold to friends as I bought Canberra tickets yesterday for $159/each (Visa presale).

But given there’s been barely enough time for her to scratch herself between the last album/tour and this album/tour I dare say you’re not going to get too much of a different show from what you saw last time.

The Pink management team (and others) will take it as a sign that it’s not worth bothering to book shows in Canberra – rather than realising that overpricing is the real issue.

So less bands will show up to play in Canberra, and shows won’t get cheaper either.

I was under the impression she was a pretty cool lady.

I’ve paid that much to see real musicians in a world class setting (gold class seats to see Ornette Coleman at the Opera House, for example). It’s a stupid amount to ask for a frothy pop act at some two-bit local arena.
