You have. Suggesting it is our wish to see kids abused and sodomised this Christmas, is extreme. And yes, I do worry about protecting my car. I also take care in protecting my property and my family. It’s natural human instinct.

fgzk, all well and good to take the high and mighty approach.. you’ve exxaggerated this kid bashing thing to the extreme. No one is saying ‘kids are bad and should be bashed or abused’. They’re saying ‘hell, if that happened to me, I’d probably want to react that way’. I know I wouldn’t actually get out and chase some kid down, but I’m sure if someone did, then he wouldn’t do it again. I’d still be keen to hear how you would have handled the situation. And when you did call the police, and they didn’t show up, and you copped a $400 bill to repair your bonnet, would you be satisfied by the fact that you did the ‘right thing’?

fgzk – seek help.

Its Christmas and most of you will get your wishes. Children will be told they are scum. That they are no good crims. That they are bad. Children will be bashed. Children will be sodomised. These things will actually happen. So you should all take some comfort that your ideas are actually being expressed for you.

The is *no way* you can justify assaulting a kid for petty criminal activity. Sure, something needs to be done – but assaulting a 15YO??? I’d like to see one of you guys, that are all talk, actually have the opportunity to do what you’ve stated above… x5 15 YO? Yeah – good luck with winning that one… (and it would make YOU the criminal).

Report it to the police (at the time); the local police would usually be well aware of the little drop kicks in their area, and it was obvious they were there 20 minutes after the first incident; they’d probably be there 20 mins later too… If you had the opportunity to hang around and wait for the cops so you could identify the offenders and make a witness statement, even better… You could even tell the police you threaten violence to the kids, and see how fast they arrive then…

suffer and tolerate the consequences of abusive behaviour from adults is more like it. Lots of kids are doing it. Your just ignoring it. Worse you take some, over stated, righteous, moral stand and demand punishment. What could you do that is worse, then what’s already happening to them?

Of course it’s all very well to say you will mete out divine punishment, but you need to catch the buggers first. So if anyone is up to cruising around the streets of Gordon looking for ne’er do wells be my guest.

First it’s chucking rocks at passing cars at Christmas, next its standing on top of overpasses thinking it’s funny to push boulders down into the traffic. And we all know how that ends.

Brats are brats for whatever reason, but there’s no excuse for them getting away with it. It needs to be dealt with before it gets serious. That said, even if the cops do respond to it, the likelihood in most (minor) cases is that there’s little they can do about it.

For all the ‘think of the children’ crew out there, how would you have reacted had it been your car? And to further speculate, how so if it had shattered a window, or hit a passenger.. etc?

What is wrong with demanding punishment? Also, the parents should hold some share of responsibility, and thus share in the punishment as well – definitely for repeat offenders anyway. I know, I know, all well and good to sit here at the keyboard and say it but enforcing it is another story. A complex situation, to be sure, and each individual case is different. Still…

And just quietly, not all of these little bevans with too much time on their idle hands are the products of ‘grim family situations’ where abuse reigns supreme. Instead they are often the products of a family situation in which there has been no discipline or teaching of ‘consequences for actions’, let alone respect for others and their property. They are allowed to go roaming the streets at all hours of the night and not questioned or called on their behaviour. I guess that is a form of ‘grim situation’, but not from the point of view of these kids. They are loving it…complete freedom and autonomy.

Bring back The Stocks.

So, fgzk, purely hypothetical, if one of these poor troubled souls were to, say, sexual assualt, or worse, commit a murder, it is your belief, with said ‘grim family situation’ that any punishment, vigilante or by the book, be lenient, as the poor children truly know no better?

Any young thug who heaves a rock at my car, whether for kicks, out of malice or due to them having a “grim family situation,” is going to spend the next few months eating through a straw. If my family are in the car with me when they do this, they’ll be lucky to be able to walk for the whole of 2011.

But you may have a point. In some parts of the world its ok to shoot rock throwing kids.

As unacceptable as his behaviour was, the little fella probably has a pretty grim family situation – hitting the kid (again) won’t change his behaviour, it will probably just make it worse. Of course their need to be consequences fir his behaviour, but assault is not one of them.

Why is it assumed by some that any thug, ner-do-well, bully, criminal or vandal, has had a “grim family situation”?

Why does the fact that many, most even, who have experienced “grim family situations” do not go on to become thugs, ner-do-wells, bullies, criminals or vandals never seem to pierce their delusion.

Why does the fact that most in this day and age have never faced any consequence of their bad actions, due to the soft soap approach demonstrated by Mr Newton, and that this has led to a society where thugs etc have no reference point for consequence, not sink in.

If you don’t call them, then they don’t know about it and of course they won’t do anything about it.

You need to:

At the time call Police – try 131444 – it’s a good start. Not so good 1/2 – 5 hours later as chances of finding them are reduced.

Get a detailed description of the offender – also good to track them down.

Be prepared to stand up in court as a witness.

Police do not possess ESP or any other superpowers to be everywhere at once.

Of course you can run him over, it’s the easiest way to off someone ang get away with it. You simply just didn’t see him, what with it being dark, all the flashing lights etc. Doesn’t have to kill him though, just break his legs, that’ll teach him a lesson.

Kids growing up without experiencing consequences. I think it is incumbent on all able-bodied males to educate them before it’s too late.
