El Reg has this strange story on Linus Torvalds and his mate Larry McVoy getting upset at Canberran Andrew Tridgell for reverse engineering McVoy’s product.

One for the serious OpenSource folks and heres another tidbit for those interested in these sorts of things.

Tridge has gone toe-to-toe with Micro$oft, I’m sure he knows what he’s doing with BK.

IP theft, yeah yeah, you knew what I was talking about.

So your saying if someone pulls the plug on a product and leaves a bunch of people in the lurch, they are allowed to find a way to recover despite copyright?

Seems a non-argument as Tridge says he is indeed working on his own solution that has nothing to do with BK. I like the way they quickly slot a nod to this at the end of the article after they’ve already drummed up the controversial paper tiger.

there’s no such thing as IP theft.

there is copyright, trade mark, or patent infringement.

In this case it’s about reverse engineering to ensure interoperability which is very definitely legal in this country.

Surely it’s not an open source argument but an IP theft argument?

That comic reminds me, lots of murmurs about using Suse workstation based networks in APS offices at the moment, stay tuned…..
