David Bale of the Tuggeranong Masters Swimming Club joined the Million Metres Club in August 2012 and was presented with his certificate and t-shirt in March 2013 at the State Long Course Championships.

The million metre award is sponsored by Vorgee and is a Masters Swimming Australia national initiative that acknowledges progress from the “learn to swim” beginner to the distance swimmer. This award is intended to stimulate members to strive for greater fitness and it is open to all registered members of Masters Swimming Australia.

It took David just over two and a half years to achieve his million metres, which is a pretty impressive time period in which to achieve this award. David said that he often swims 5km+ swims of a morning and swimming with Woden Swim Club kids contributed tremendously to his getting there in such a short time period. David’s desire to reach that million mark resulted in his high level of fitness at during that period.

The Million Metre Awards were established in 2001 for one, three, and ten million metres. In 2004, they were expanded to include five and seven million metres. In 2007, the two million metre award was added. In 2008, the Award was expanded to recognise swimmers who attain fifteen million metres and above.

It is as simple as just logging the metres that you swim in training and in races on the computer spreadsheet that is provided on request.
