If you love the smell of roasting chestnuts and like the idea of a rural lifestyle with income-producing orchards, then a home and property for sale in Hoskinstown presents a rare opportunity.

‘Tweenhills Chestnuts’ at 89 Pollack Road is just 30 minutes’ drive from Canberra and is well-known locally for its farm gate sales, its ‘pick your own’ offerings and its red van at the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets.

On the market for $1,480,000, Tweenhills Chestnuts also sells its high-quality sweet-tasting chestnuts through online sales, direct to restaurants and at established markets such as the Sydney Wholesale Market.

The property features a comfortable three-bedroom home and around 40 acres of land – including 25 acres of orchards comprising 1500 mature chestnut trees, as well as hazelnut trees and apple trees.

It also comes with a double garage, a fully-line hobby room, a drip and micro-spray irrigation system, two large dams, an inspection and grading shed, a cool room, a machinery shed and everything needed to run the chestnut business, including all equipment, websites, training and the like.

John and Heather Kane bought the property 33 years ago and set about establishing their chestnut business 20 years ago.

Mr Kane describes the property as their “paradise”, with its gentle slopes, alluvial soil, peace and quiet, and “very comfortable rural lifestyle”.

“We’re regretting having to move on but my retirement age has come and gone,” Mr Kane said.

He said that while 50 per cent of the chestnut industry produces ‘non-peelers’ with no taste, they grow peeling chestnuts and “one of the best roasting sweet chestnuts you can get anywhere in Australia.”

“We have a really large clientele. At times we just cannot keep up with it.”

While the property is already income-producing, Mr Kane said there is potential to value-add, such as by producing chestnut flowers or chestnut meal.

The home at ‘Tweenhills Chestnuts’ is north-facing and includes three oversized bedrooms, a rumpus or fourth bedroom, an ensuite and walk-in robe to the master, a kitchen with modern appliances, and formal lounge and dining areas.

It also has established gardens and multiple outdoor entertaining areas.

Listing agent Dan Woodford of PRD Nationwide Bungendore said there has been a lot of interest in the property from as far afield as Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

“It is very unique with its attached income and proximity to the town,” Mr Woodford said.
