I crave for my lunch staple, a Vietnamese bread roll.

Where are the good Vietnamese Bakeries in Canberra?

Waramanga has excellent rolls, Rivett are good too.
If you want a banh mi or Vietnamese pork roll you can get a good one
At the Saigon Bakery in Queanbeyan. Your best bet is to buy the saigon
Rolls and salad and make a chicken pate and build one yourself. They
Are very simple and pate can be made in 5 mins. Chicken livers
Butter, port or brandy in a pan with salt, pepper, onion and garlic and blend it.
Then spread in roll and add salad and pork. You will impress people with
Such a simple dish. Good luck.

I part own a Vietnamese restaurant in hoi an.

I managed to pick up a Saigon Roll from the bakery at Southlands a month or two ago. This was the first one I’d ever eaten, so I can’t really comment on its quality – but I found it tasty enough.

I asked once if they had sourdough bread & they looked at me as if I was mad…

I asked Baker’s Delight if they had Pork Rolls or Siu Mai rolls and they looked at me as if I was an idiot at a Vietnamese Bakery asking for sourdough … go figure.

Gold.

Raycli – you are right. I went to Fyshwick twice this weekend. They had sold out on Saturday by 1pm. Went back on Sunday morning for a seriously substandard roll. 🙁

what a shame, I only noticed that they had them the other day and now that’s dashed 🙁

I haven’t had one since the Hub closed

Vietnamese Bakeries is nearly an oxymoron. I reckon 1 in 10 is great the rest are as bland as can be.

It makes sense they don’t know about sourdough. The evolution of Vietnamese bread if from their french colonial past. The french were early in adopting industrially grown yeasts in part due to labour laws that protected bakers from having to work all night.

‘Thanks for that info – I had sometimes wondered why Vietnamese bakeries make much better crusty breads than franchises like Brumbys or Bakers Delight.

Don’t feel foolish Camilla. That said, the real name for the rolls is Bahn Mi not Saigon Rolls.

Except if you buy one in Hanoi and it’s called Bahn My and doesn’t have any on the multiple pork products that the Saigon version has. If you ask for Bahn Mi/My in the north you will get kebab meat on a roll. I have a pic but cannot paste into this post

Hub is closed? Sad… they had great rolls

Let me save you the stress… you cannot buy decent Banh Mi in Canberra. While they may sell a ‘whitewashed’ version at the Fyshwick bakery (when I went they said they didnt sell it however they do sell Pho) and Tuggeranong Cafe (only on week days), you will not be able to purchase an actual BBQ pork roll. I’ve found that all the Vietnamese bakeries here use processed BBQ pork which just is not the same. I’m guessing this is due to the risk of food poisoning seeing as there is no demand in Canberra?

I went to Kaleen today. They have a bakery selling ‘saigon rolls’ but no pork/chicken/ salad rolls.
I might take a mental health day tomorrow and check out fyshwick.
Shall report back on my findings.

The huge asian supermarket on Benjamin Way near the lake in Belconnen Town Centre sells these rolls at lunchtimes. They make them up fresh in front of you.

Hub has now closed. Unfortunately, there is no Banh Mi at Belco.

Very sad to hear, but not surprising. Everything good in Belconnen must come to an end.

Hey Camilla, I believe the Saigon store (an asian groceries store) in Dickson (opposite the petrol station near St Vinnies) brings in pork rolls from Cabramatta every now and then, but I cannot remember what days. Although, they wouldn’t be as nice and fresh as one made on the spot. I miss Banh Mi too!

What we call the saigon roll, the Vietnamese call a banh mi.
They’re everywhere in Vietnam, but they only cost about a dollar or two.
There’s a walk-in cafe\takeaway in Tuggeranong that does a pretty good Saigon roll if you’re after a quick $6 snack.
Immediate left on heading for the Good Guys from Target.

Also, they make these.

THANK YOU!!!
I feel slightly foolish for eating this all the time in Melbourne without knowing the proper name.

Or asking for a soy latte at the kebab shop.

Bánh mì

Try Grannies bakery in Dickson (if it’s still there in the courtyard next to Zeff’s – I’ve not been there in donkey’s). She used to do some pretty fantastic pastries too (mini cheescakes and apple pies).

Currently I go to the one in the arcade off the Morisett Street carpark in QBN. Can’t remember its name, but look for the “Copper Kettle” signs. They also do fresh springs rolls (But you have to get in early or they’ll run out).

The husband and wife team at the bakery at Wanniassa shops do great breads, pastries and cakes, pies and pasties. Their salad rolls are a good thing, too!

The one at Rivett shops is excellent. They even supply rolls to an Italian deli in Mawson so if the Italians think it is good it must be. Get there early in the morning.

Seconded. And their pan de casa rolls are excellent. I believe they also own and operate the bakery at Waramanga shops (never tried it myself) so may be worth a look too.

Where are the good Vietnamese Bakeries in Canberra?

Where aren’t they? My criticism of Vietnamese bakeries is that they are all pretty similar. Having said that, the Kaleen bakery does AWESOME Saigon rolls (lovely crunchy exterior) and “panini”. The latter are nothing like Italian bread, but are a nice, softish, slightly chewy roll that the kids love.

You don’t mention where you are, I should think this is pretty important, as there is no point suggesting a bakery that is on the other side of town.
