Sweet. Then why are all the Jerra people apparently protesting that they demand the lower-SES Tralee area gets built next door to them? Then you would potentially have a so called ‘bad area’. Is it just for a high school? (I heard of the radio this am about a pool and other sporting facilities too? Plus some sort of new trunk road?)
Surely then there’d be Jerra complaints that the new high school was filled with (apparently) lower-SES Tralee people from the so-called ‘affordable’ housing there?
(Just playing devil’s advocate here. Most people on RA seem to be concerned about the quality of other kids going to their kid’s school….and you brought up ‘bad areas’, so there is apparently a distinction between areas based on house price – and the people that live in them?)
I don’t live in Qbn,and I have no real problem with Tralee being built or not. Nor do I really care if noise is eventually ‘shared’ across Cbr in future. However, if I look at it logically (as I have no emotional buy-in to the argument), it seems like one of the last places that a suburb should be built? I know i’d personally never want to live in a house that was under an airport flight path.
Then again, I haven’t actually read either side’s proposals, plans or arguments in full detail, so who am I to comment! It may not be as bad as the Airport are making out? Once again, just playing devil’s advocate….

As I understand it (and I’m probably not up with the latest info here), is that despite having plenty of students and population to justify a high school, Jerra doesn’t have one. If Tralee went ahead, we would. In terms of house price, I wouldn’t have thought the new stock would be appreciably cheaper than Jerra is because of the cost of building.

As someone who has lived in what I would consider ‘poor’ areas, I would draw a very clear parallel between low socio-economic areas and ‘bad’ areas. Probably not very PC, but definitely my experience.

I didn’t say there was anything wrong with Q-town. I was just pointing out that people I have met who live in Jerrabomberra seem to be offended by the suggestion their very prestigious address is part of Queanbeyan – and I find that pretty amusing.

What’s wrong with Queanbeyan? It has far more character and community feel than most of Canberra, and is closer to the middle of Canberra than lots of ACT suburbs!

I’m a Canberran born & bred, recently moved to Queanbeyan and I LOVE it there! I still take the piss out of it, of course – but in reality I feel safer and happier there than I have in many ACT suburbs. Having said that, I have lived in quite dodgy ACT suburbs!

But on topic, keeping in mind I have done limited research into this, I do think the Tralee debate is 100% about money-making and would undoubtedly turn into a major issue within a few years. Canberra Airport, whilst apparently run by pure evil, is important to both NSW & ACT and it WILL continue to grow and become busier as the years go by. When the need arises for a busier flight schedule and/or the return of flights at unfortunate hours of the night – how are Tralee residents going to react to that??

But that won’t be VBC’s problem, will it….

And Queanbeyan never wanted the gaol there but it still went in. And we don’t want you driving through our city on the way to the coast.

Why should we take into consideration what the ACT wants, they never have any regard for us.

I love when it becomes us vs them. NSW could do so much more harm to the ACT than the ACT could ever do to NSW. Look in the comments of the above link, some tool starts on about road upgrades and as is pointed out to him we could disconnect the power and make it real difficult for ACT drivers to ever leave the territory. Of course that won’t happen because NSW isn’t as petty as some…

I don’t see why some piss ant little airport has so much power over the people. More affordable housing anywhere in the Canberra region is only going to be a good thing, after the ACT glorified council are never going to do anything about housing affordability.

Anyway, yes, what we all need is more housing directly under a runway flight path. Sounds awesome – I know I’ll be the first to secure one of these beauties when they come on the market! We need to fight for our right to live under an industrial hairdryer! Of course, when I buy my block i’ll be the first to say: “hey, whst’s with all this ‘plane noise?!?!?”. As for affordable, I’ll see it when I believe it.
BTW, what’s with Jerra? How did developers manage to get so many people to buy a block/house in the middle of nowhere, with no facilities (even a decade later)?? Was that the beta-testing prototype for Gungahlin? Hahaha! Just joking, people…..!
