37-year-old man charged following fatal cyclist crash near Lake George

A 37-year-old man has been charged with dangerous and negligent driving occasioning death after a fatal cyclist crash near Lake George yesterday (3 June).

Emergency services were called to Tarago Road at Bungendore near Lake George, about 34km from Canberra, about 10 am, following reports a cyclist was hit by a Mercedes Sprinter van.

The 55-year-old female cyclist died at the scene.

The male driver was not physically injured and was taken to Queanbeyan Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers from Monaro Police District established a crime scene and the van was seized for mechanical examination.

Crash Investigation Unit officers also attended the scene and commenced investigations into the crash.

The driver of the van, a 37-year-old man, was later taken to Queanbeyan Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.

His licence was suspended and he was granted conditional bail to appear at Queanbeyan Local Court on Tuesday 12 June 2018.

My heart drops hearing of accidents of this type – single cyclist – country road – dangerous driving. It doesn’t surprise me though which is the really sad bit. The laws are in place but the environment and behaviour just doesn’t work safely. What can be done…?
