Immune system topples like dominos after bad pizza

The Dominos store in Mawson yesterday affirmed by belief in rumours that most Dominos stores are utter crap.

I live in Pearce, and my flatmate and I were craving some pizza. Feeling overly lazy I whipped out the Mastercard and suggested we order it online from Pizza Hut in Phillip, and get it delivered – we have good standings with Pizza Hut and have never had bad pizza or any issues.

Unfortunately their website sucks, and couldn’t find our street. So we checked the Dominos website, and sure enough it knew the street – so we proceeded to order an 8 meat pizza, a hawaiian and a supreme, delivered with a bottle of coke. It all came to $24.50 including delivery, can’t argue that price. Also the delivery was prompt.

The issues – I didn’t get an 8 meat pizza. I got a mess of cheese and meat from which I could only tell a variety of three meats. The hawaiian was good, can’t complain about the hawaiian. The ‘supreme’ was actually a variant that I, or my flatmate, couldn’t relate to any on their menu. And it tasted like crap. As I write this at midday the next day, I now have stomach pains, as does my flatmate. My thyroid glands are swollen and my body aches like I just woke up after passing out in the bathroom at Cube.

The worst part of it all was that the delivery guy didn’t even want to see my credit card for proof of identity. I asked him if he wanted to see it, and he responded with “I really couldn’t care less”. He then stumbled back to his car, stalled it, and then proceeded to drive off.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that this definitely confirms that Dominos is crap. It just definitely confirms my belief that it is crap, and that every time I’ve gone there I either got sick or impatient waiting. Anybody with thoughts?

Plaka pizza Mawson +1, have been going there for 25 years and they have a very good restaurant out back as well.

For anyone who lives even vaguely near Braddon, Crust pizza is fantastic! I don’t go anywhere near Pizza Hut or Dominos anymore.

I think Dominos/Pizza Hut/whatever are all absolutely crap. In fact I am constantly amazed that these hideous slushy things are allowed to be called “pizzas”.

Having said that, once or twice a year I run out of ideas and buy a couple of Dominos pizzas. Last Sunday night was just one such night. Two pizzas arrived promptly and they hit the spot without making anybody ill.

How did I miss a pizza thread, in my own neighbourhood.. Ive worked in several of the stores mentioned above, and sadly most of it is true. As for the delivery driver needing to check your card, well theyve got your address. Having said that, Ive worked for non-chain pizza shops where we’re required to ask for the card and a second form of photo ID.

My mate told me this story the other day over lunch…

Seems he saw the ad for their Tony Pepperoni and since he likes a lot of pepperoni he ordered one and went in to pick it up. Got home, opened the box and thought he had the wrong order. Insted of the masses of pepperoni in the Dominos adverising, there was a single titchy slice of pepperoni for each pizza slice.

Long story short, but thats pretty much how it works these days. It depends who makes your pizza, and whether theyre involved in the cost-cutting and rule-following, or if theyre just making what you ask for. I was often told to under-top pizzas, for example using half cups of toppings instead of a full cup. One recent trick, is to only put 6 or 12 slices of pepperoni on a pizza instead of the previous 8 or 16. When considering most pizzas have pepperoni, this can be a saving of 25% on one topping (even though it costs about $2/kg when purchased in bulk.)

A Dominos pizza tasted like crap. Who knew?

Thyroid glands? I think you may mean lymph?

Domino’s is strictly for the under 20 crowd whose constitution is made of much sterner stuff than the average adult.

We always have Lebanese bread in the freezer, Paul Newman’s pasta sauce in the pantry and pepperoni and cheese in the fridge. Assemble. Cook. In under 30 minutes you get Best Pepperoni Pizza Ever. But then we are old and boring.

Eagle Boys in Gungahlin is a safe bet really good service and staff and the pizzas taste as they say REAL

As in “you call this an F-ing pizza? This wouldn’t pass for new F-ing soles for my F-ing shoes. It’s complete F-ing crap – not F-ing pizza!” ??

when i went into my local store the other day the manager is swearing at the staff using the F word.

Being a vegetarian, no, it wasn’t. Weston Creek Dominos – too many attrocities to list.

Jonno’s or Plaka’s are infinitely superior choices for a Mawson pizza.

So you stopped going because they asked if that was okay? They didn’t insist? They asked if you cared?

They simply asked, and because you were a vegetarian you got highly offended and never went again? Because they dared to ask if you minded before they made a new pizza?

Have I understood this correctly?

Yeah, that’s kinda the gist of it. They had completely stuffed up an order. I have no idea how a cheese pizza can “accidently” be made as the meatiest thing on the menu.

It’s the equivalent of going to a bar, asking for a beer and the bartender coming back with a weak, soy, decaf latte and saying “sorry, I accidently made you the wrong drink, would you like it anyway?”. I’m not offended that they asked, I’m offended that they managed to stuff it up so bad then offer such a pathetic excuse.

It wasn’t just that the pizza was wrong, it had also taken them about 5 minutes of scratching their heads trying to work out the mistake while they left my partner’s pizza on the bench (not the heated shelves) and was subsequently cold by the time we got it home.

They didn’t offer to make another pizza btw, just offered me the meatlovers.

Have to say that on the northside at Dominos Florey the pizza has been in a steady decline for some time (like since they moved there from Page). I remember the good old days when it was Jacko’s and Silvio’s. The toppings have become less and less and the general quality of the pizza has gone to crap. I enjoy the gourmet pizza from Charcoal Chicken at Charnwood or making my own. Nothing worse than getting a crap pizza when you are hungry and then having to take it back. I’m sure there are plenty of people who just eat it and vow to never go back there again……….until they next feel like pizza and they do go back…lolz. It’s always price versus quality. The pizza chains are cheap and the quality is crap, take-away gourmet pizza is a bit pricier but better quality.

Dude, you ordered an 8 meat pizza. What do you expect?

I think he expected 8 meats….

Although, when you consider the camel anus, lama lips, and road kill ‘roo in the salami, it must be pretty close to eight!

Best pizzas i have ever had was from the old video arcade and anime movie rental place that used to be near revolution in civic. um, kc’s i think. i wish that place never closed down.

Dude, you ordered an 8 meat pizza. What do you expect?

Home-made is best.

For about seven bucks you can make two of these, which are about the best-tasting pizza there is: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cookbook:Flammekueche

Can’t say i’ve had massive problems with pizzas from dominos/pizza hut. The dominos ones are smaller and less toppings than pizza hut, though can vary depending on which 15 year old made them. I always check the orders though, they mixed my order up once.. was easily solved when insisting they make the right orders from scratch.

If you make them in your backyard wood-fired pizza oven….

Very high on my list of things to build when I buy a house (hopefully soon)…

YUM!!! Evatt pizza rocks! Plenty of tasty cheese! I have had lots of friends from suburbs on other side of Belco make it their preferred.

Domino’s Florey isn’t too bad, could be biased cause my daughter works there, but was there regular plenty before that. MMMMMM I’m quite addicted of late to a cheese lovers on puff pastry base with BBQ sauce.
I used to have to have chilli flakes on their pizza’s because you could rely on your pizza being bland half the time (damn smoking). I also love their chicken kickers & choc brownies. This summer I’m afraid you can’t beat their cold coke, think I need new seals on my fridge!

Funny someone related the catholic church to Domino’s, no surprise then that my daughter’s Catholic high in the same suburb is a feeder of ready servants…

I only just fell over this site today, I’m having fun going through the archives 🙂 I think it’s great, thanks whoever started it.

OP, just be glad you didnt try the vegetarian or any other pizza that has garlic on it.

Both the Mawson and Conder stores seem to think that the garlic paste (which you would normally put about 1 teaspoon of into a whole dish) is actually to be spread across the pizza like the tomato sauce, nice and thick. Any time a friend orders one, I can literally smell the garlic as soon as I pick up the box.

Thus, you should have just CALLED Pizza Hut. Your flatmate could have just gone to the ATM and gotten cash out. Now you’re sitting at home with food poisoning, and I’m sitting at home laughing at your sorry arse.

P.S. We should totally recommend that store to a certain Mr. Richmond when he arrives.

Kieran: from my non-legally binding research, I’ve found a direct correlation between the delivery means and the quality of delivered product. *pulls up pants* “back in my day…”

Pizza delivered in a car with mahoosive understeer (Datto 120Y) results in an intact yet cold pizza because everyone knows Dattos + gravel = win.

Pizza delivered in a Suzuki Swift with a big red phone on top driven by a 16 year old stoned maniac wearing a giant beagle suit being paid per delivery will result in hilarity, mais pizza tres mal.

Pommy bastard3:26 pm 09 Feb 09

my body aches like I just woke up after passing out in the bathroom at Cube.

My guffaw for the day, many thanks for that.

The only way to guarantee a great pizza is to make it yourself, including the dough for the base.

Mass produced ones suck.

I’m mystified by finding real Mexicans in the Tetons! why would they live somewhere so cold? It’s Vermont-cold here. I may not get to try them until Wednesday night as there’s “do’s” on the next 2 nights. But the hand-scrawled Specials card on the door looked the goods.

Take-away pizza from Belluci’s Woden is one of the best. Although, you can’t have it delivered. So get delivery and eat cr@p, or go get the good stuff yourself.

And if you think the store has given you food poisoning, you should make a complaint to ACT Health.

Sounds like you’re having a great time, ant.

: )

I am probably more jealous of your proper Mexican restaurant full of real Mexicans than your pizza though, although that does sound yummy.

Interesting the differences between the franchises here and there. I found Maccas quite different in LA – too much creamy mayo sort of sauce which was quite different from here.

I second Evatt take away. Had a pizza from there which had a ridiculous abmount of (good) topping.

Normally I can get through a large pizza myself, if I push it. I had just 3 slices of that Evatt pizza before my belt broke.

Tonight I had a really good pizza from Dominos. The catch is, it was in Jackson, Wyoming. The Dominoes in Canberra are appalling, the pizza is just not food. It’s not edible, much like KFC.

But it was cold and I’d acquired a jar of jalapenos to improve it with. You have to tell them everything you want here, what htey start with is a Cheese pizza. So I got a thin crust (and it was, and rather nice) and pepperoni, olives, tomato, and extra cheese. And with a jalapeno slice per bite, it was (I hate to say it), rather nice. Not greasy, not tasteless, not stodgey.

Oddly though, they’d cut it into a grid pattern, not the usual slices.

Hopefully I still have a thyroid upon waking tomorrow.

Sadly, there is a proper Mexican restaurant next door full of real Mexicans that does take out so dinner will be from there next time I’m buying dinner.

KieranAP is Kieran from Adventure Paintball. Paintball groups often smash some pizza at the end of their booking – looks like Domino’s are the source of those pizzas.

I agree with Duke though – they tend to look after their big customers. I used to manage a sports centre that pulled 350 pizzas out of our chosen supplier at the time every three months. Most of the time they bent over backwards to do whatever we wanted.

I could kill for some pizza right now.

Stupid nutritional discipline.

I think you’ll find the quality varies location-by-location. For example, I find Dominoes in Erindale to be better then the Pizza Hut there whereas my friend swears that the Pizza Hut in Cooleman court is far better then the Dominoes there.

As for the driver, he probably figured that on a pre-paid by credit card delivery there is 0% chance of a tip so customer-service wasn’t really on the top of his mind. Also, to put your mind at rest consumers are protected against Credit Card fraud by the Bank so really checking your Credit Card is for their benefit not yours.

Second Lastly, There’s no excuse to be paying loads (Although the OP got a heaps sweet deal, assuming $3.95 for the coke the pizza’s only cost him $6.95 each with no delivery surcharge!) for a pizza in Canberra they all price-match and honour competitors coupons. Dominoes is also a heavy advertiser on the back of super-market dockets. Use http://www.hotdockets.com and find the best deal!

Finally, the best pizza you can get from one of those stores is a create-your-own Pepporoni, Pineapple, Anchovies & Garlic pizza. True story.

Someone actually gets their pizza’s from a chain?

When I moved from Brisbane 5 years ago I was amzaed that all the takeaways in the suburbs made pizzas. What was even better was the fact that they are all immensly better than the chain. Try the Evatt Takeaway or Charcoal Chicken and you will definately do better.

I always find them to be good quality and easily definable by the toppings.

Problems are sorted out quickly and professionally. A quick (polite) phone call or visit to the Manager (not in the middle of peak times) tends to resolve issues well.

Also haven’t seen any relationship between means of delivery (eg Datto 120Y) on the quality of the product delivered. When I was a kid my first car was a piece of sh$t, but it was all I can afford. Not sure the kids should be bagged out for trying to make a quid and not having a rich parent to buy them a boy racer.

One last thing, these guys make 100’s of pizzas a day, if they were responsible for a food poisoning outbreak I think that would have made the news by now as 1000’s would be affected etc.

Every couple of years I try a domino’s pizza. And every time I do it seems worse then last time.

I am sure that back in the mid-nineties there were tonnes of pizza places around, eagle boys, pizza hut, jackos, etc. Often all servicing the same or overlapping areas. Now it seems that it is luck is there is one close to you, and as we have established, they are crap. It’s not that people have stopped eating pizza is it?

My mate told me this story the other day over lunch…

Seems he saw the ad for their Tony Pepperoni (http://www.dominos.com.au/menu/pizzas/) and since he likes a lot of pepperoni he ordered one and went in to pick it up. Got home, opened the box and thought he had the wrong order. Insted of the masses of pepperoni in the Dominos adverising, there was a single titchy slice of pepperoni for each pizza slice.

Next time he went in he took the picture from the flyer, and when the pizza was handed over he checked it against the picture and summoned the Dominos employee, then the manager to check the pizza against the advertised product. The store couldn’t see the problem and told him if he wanted the same amount of papperoni as in the ad he would have to oder extra topping, taking the pizza price from $12.50 to $15.10 I think he said. Not wanting to miss the footy on TV he went with that rip-off but was even more determined to get even.

So next week when it was pizza time, he ordered the Toni Pepperoni with double extra topping of pepperoni, which was supposedly worth nearly $18.00. Then, in a masterful stroke of consumer power, he counted out $12.50 and put that in his pocket. At the counter he received the pizza, opened the carton, inspected the pizza and carefully pulled out $12.50 and put that on the counter. When the staff tried to get the rest of the money the pizza was supposedly worth, he pulled out the ad and in front of all the customers in the store had it out with the manager as to whether the pizza that supposedly had double pepperoni did in fact contain any more that the advertised normal version.

Suffice to say that the manager had to admit, in front of all the other customers in the store, that the pizza that had been ordered with double extra pepperoni, only contained about the amount of topping that was in the advertised product.

He’s happy to leave well enough alone now, and will probably continue to patronise the business. Lucky for Dominos it was him not me, or they would have been pursued through Trade Practices until they wished they had never opened their rip-off business..

Trev Fincham1:49 pm 09 Feb 09

So stop eating it.

It will be the same next time and the time after that.

I know people who complain and complain every time they get it but will get it the next week thinking it might be different.

Go into their shop in Mawson. The manager is about 15 and hangs out the front next to his busted old attempt at a done up car. Acting like working at dominos is the utter shit and how you couldnt get much cooler than standing out the front in your untucked dominos uniform.

DarkLadyWolfMother1:44 pm 09 Feb 09

Last time I went into Weston Domino’s, after a second time of the order not getting to us in time, I found out why. There was one person working the entire shop (customer service, making pizzas, etc), and as best I could tell, noone to do the deliveries….

yeah I’ve been there a few times recently, quality’s not bad (as good as i could expect from Dominos). But I agree about the wait times… They seem to take forever! even if its not remotely busy.

luther_bendross1:29 pm 09 Feb 09

If you shop at Dominos, Pizza Hut, Maccas, KFC et al you really have no grounds to complain (food poisoning aside, I think…). The food is cheap, made by stoned 15 year olds and delivered in a Datto 120Y. You get what you pay for (ie pus.)

“My thyroid glands are swollen”?????? You have more than one? And it’s/they affected by possible food poisoning? Better get yourself to a good immunology research department, you’re a legend!

My sympathies tho – too much cheese does me no good either!

Gungahlin Al1:23 pm 09 Feb 09

Funny how a lot of people expect that just because a shop has the word ‘pizza’ in its name that they actually provides pizzas…

Could it be because $8 slice of dough and melted cheese doesn’t have quite the same ring to it?

We thought we were on to a good thing with Dominos in Weston using the web site, but once they just forgot us for an hour and a half. When they finally got to us the pizzas were cold.

Thinking it a one off, we used them again about 6 weeks later. This time they forgot one pizza. Rang up, complained, they sent a new one. When that finally arrived, 45 minutes after the first batch it wasn’t even one we’d orderd. So we rang again, complained, argued, and got them to deliver the pizza we ordered and a refund.

Refunds have to be a little touchy with web services – the central office gets the credit card receipt, but the store gave the refund in cash. That’s probably something they need to work on to stop the store getting shafted, but hey… they’re the ones that screwed up…

Won’t be going back…

We had a dominos pizza from gungahlin and the next day we all had hangovers. It seemed a bit strange considering we weren’t drinking that night. I certainly wouldn’t recommend them for the elderly or pregnant women.

Eyeball In A Quart Jar Of Snot1:20 pm 09 Feb 09

The fact that you think La Porchetta is ‘awesome’ in my opinion pretty much completely invalidates any credibility you may have had.

Dominoes are the best of a bad bunch IMO. They probably would have fixed the problem if you complained.

I tried one of their short-lived flavour concoctions only recently and after getting it home found it to be inedible. I returned the pizza and the manager was very apologetic, gave me a replacement upsized pizza and a free bottle of coke.

If you live in Pearce why not try a Plaka pizza from Mawson?!

That you think that Pizza Hut in Phillip is a good option in my opinion pretty much completely invalidates any credibility you may have had.

That place is putz central.

I guess that if you live in Pearce you would have been served by either the Mawson store or the Weston store. I’ve been to both numerous times and have had no complaints.

*shrugs* If you want guaranteed awesome, go to La Porchetta in Tuggeranong.
