I have young children and seemingly very little time outside of work, study, kids etc. to do anything if any great excitement – like see the Rolling Stones. A friend of mine however was very disappointed when they had to delay their concert after she had secured tickets to the Adelaide show and arranged her flights etc.
I must confess to finding it a bit funny listening to a discussion this morning (and a few subsequent news reports) along the lines of ‘the Stones have rescheduled their tour and failed to include a Canberra date’. In my mind, I guess I figure we’re just not cool enough, or big enough to warrant such a gig.
But, the discussions got me to thinking. They go to Adelaide? My grandparents live in Adelaide… I know the town is in no way cooler than Canberra (I’m sure many native Adelaide expats may disagree) – it sure isn’t Sydney or Melbourne. So I guess I started wondering why we don’t get the big names here. I haven’t looked up from my little suburban box for a while, but I can’t remember the last time a big name played here. I do remember seeing Dire Straits at the then Bruce Stadium (in the rain) quite some years (possibly decades) ago.
What is it? Do we not have a suitable venue? Would we not fill it? Are we lacking in suitable groovy boozers for muso’s to hang out afterwards? Do we smell?
At the very least, we would attract the run off from those who weren’t able to secure big city tickets.
So now I’m kind of p*ssed about something I didn’t even realise I cared about. Grrrr
