Chief Minister Stanhope has announced that the Australia Council is shelling out $350,000 to set up “a new literary organisation ‘Writing Australia’ in the ACT.”
Writing Australia aims to promote and develop Australia’s literature sector through the delivery of national programs and partnerships. Writing Australia will raise the national and international profile of Australian writers, and be a national advocacy body for literature. Writing Australia will augment the current work of the State and Territory Writers Centres.
Earlier this year, the ACT Government and the Australia Council each contributed $25,000 to assess the feasibility of establishing the new organisation, including the development of a business plan to present to the Australia Council’s Literature Board.
Writing generally being a solitary process, not requiring much in equipment, we’re not sure how much good this will do. But it’s a nice thing for Canberra to have if someone else is paying for it.
