The ABC has a story on a probe into the Belconnen Remand Centre’s compliance with meeting basic human rights for its inmates (who, we should remember, have not been found guilty of anything).
Staff shortages at the remand centre have prompted more lock-downs, which stop detainees leaving their cell to exercise, seeing visitors and going to rehabilitation sessions.
ACT human rights and discrimination commissioner Helen Watchirs says her office is investigating the situation.
“The fact that they’re increasing and not stabilising is a concern,” she said.
Staff shortages as an excuse smacks of incompetent management. If you can’t fill the places you need, then you have to offer better pay and conditions. If the ACT Government can’t adjust the budget accordingly then Ministers should be resigning.
But we all know that’s not how things work in irresponsible Stanhopia.
