radio ratings

The first Nielsen radio ratings of 2011 are out.

2CC had big gains, but remains a minor player. JJJ had a big increase. but FM104 is king of the heap with a strong increase perhaps fuelled by Skyfire.

The Beast (ABC 666), didn’t have a great month but remains number 2 ahead of 106.

Get one of those little FM transmitters which allow you to retransmit your MP3 player on an old car radio. Some models allow you to set the frequency anywhere in the 88-108MHz band. When I used to travel by bus in Adelaide they would force feed us a radio station, so I would override it with my walkman. A bit of techno or some Derek & Clive for the commute.

Honestly, when I listen to radio (when I forget my Iriver- in the morning on the way to work) I listen to 106 only because they actually play music. I don’t mind Lisa, but I cannot stand the 104 morning crew at all.

I think it is great that the ABC has such high ratings, and I am truly sick of being forced to listen to talkback radio on the bus on the way to work. Grating on the ears

106 will struggle while they persist with Lisa Ridgely. the woman is such a bleeding heart wanna be. I would have thought that breakfast radio was designed to be a bit more up vibe and entertaining but she is brlliant at bringing the tone down and sad sacking her way through every show. Cam Sullings is a good guy and good at his job but he has gottne himself caught up in Lisa’s grim and sad view of life.

It is a disgrace that the ABC rates so highly. Just goes to show how many rich greenie/lefty pubes there are in Canberra. As for FM104.7 and Mix being 1 & 3, how can this be? I never hear those stations at all around Canberra yet every bus or taxi I travel in has 2CC playing. Also in a recent poll on a local website asking your favourite station 2CC won hands down.

It is well known that ratings are conducted for the benefit of advertisers and the under 30 demographic is the most favoured because it is quite wrongly believed that these people have loads of money and if you get them to buy your product they will stay with you for life. Silly, isn’t it but this myth is constantly regurgitated in the trade publications. Hence the constant placement of FM104.7 and Mix as the top stations. The methodology used for gathering the ratings is deliberately weighted towards the youth demographic in order to please the advertisers.

If anything, the baby boomers and retirees who listen to 2CC and 2CA are either top executives or have made their fortune and have lots of money to spend. In the media this demographic is unfashionable and one of the things media executives don’t like is their station “skewing too old”.

As far as the ABC is concerned, you can discount any ratings they might get. They are widely regarded as a left wing/green propaganda apparatus with zero credibility and the people who listen to them or watch their TV stations are the same crowd who read The Canberra Times.

Written, spoken and authorised by someone wh obviously listens to and rings up talk radio and bleats about everything and nothing. Too much time on your hands if you have time to ring up and bemoan life to some ‘shock jock’ big mouth who’ll say anything to get people to ring in and flap their jaws apprpriately or inappropriately as the case usually is.

Absolutely.

We should all listen to commercial radio, watch commercial TV and eat dogs*** for breakfast.

The main reason I turned away from 104.7 is because it felt nearly every time I tuned in I was subjected to 3 minutes of advertisements so I would just turn it off again! Nowadays I listen to 666 or news radio. I’m just so sick of ads.

How is the methodology for gathering the ratings “deliberately” weighted?

Have a look at this document which is indicative of the methodology the Nielsen uses http://au.nielsen.com/products/documents/2011RadioSurvivalKit.pdf. Their sampling is based on geographic and demographic data.

They sample about 1100 households a year in Canberra .If you look at previous graphs its likely the variation in stations between this survey and the last survey is unlikely to be statistically significant.

John Moulis:

Your an idiot with a rather biased view of the media landscape. The ABC demographic would be highly sought after by advertisers if they ever get the opportunity.

Good to see News Radio is there. My insomnia companion.

How 104.7 has stayed on top with the Fifi and Jules crap (instead of Hamish and Andy) amazes me.

+1 I listen to my iPod on the way home rather than Fifi and Jules. They’re simply not funny.

+2 I’m not usually driving during their show, but when I am, I change the station or turn the radio off to get away from them.

Maybe some people like radio without having to be subjected to shock-jocks spewing bile and annoying commercial advertising perhaps? Anyways, stick your ideologies up your arse.

I LOVE Lisa’s gsoh, on par with mine – wacky and fun!

Someone clearly has their Liberal Party dues paid up…

Yeah, NewsRadio up 10%! Bring it!

Tracee Hutchinson, drop me a line if you’re ever in town…

60 minutes of commercial radio between the hours of 7am to 10am; news, ads, banal comment by presenters attempting to be funny, ads, a song, another attempt at humour by presenters commenting on latest scandal by someone famous for being famous, ads, a song, ads, news.

Utter crap.

Where’s ONEWAY?

Radio stations still exist???

WHAT! Canberra has other radio stations apart from 2CC. Since when?

Perhaps the increase is fuelled by the annoying Lisa Ridgley on the 106.3 breakfast show.
