If you are contemplating the state of the world right now, and ready for some thought-provoking conversations, head to Kambri at ANU this month where the organisers of HERE I AM: Art by Great Women are presenting Women Talk, a lecture series presenting accomplished women holding insightful conversations on issues relevant to a Canberra audience.

As part of the series, Ashley Dawson-Damer, author of A Particular Woman, will be in conversation with Maryanne Voyazis, head of development and executive director of National Gallery of Australia Foundation on 18 February from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

The talk, ‘The Power of Patronage – Women Supporting Women in the Arts’, will address initiatives that support and celebrate the diversity and creativity of Australian women artists, and delve into the fascinating life and work of Ms Dawson-Damer, one of Australia’s greatest arts philanthropists.

Ms Dawson-Damer has a deep appreciation for performing and visual arts. She is currently an NGA Foundation Board member, trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW and director of the Opera Australia Capital Fund.

Over the last 30 years, Ms Dawson-Damer has been a member of the board of Festival of Sydney, the National Art School, the National Institute of Dramatic Art, UTS and more. She became a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2014, and in 2020 was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government.

Ms Dawson-Damer says being a woman on these boards meant she was in a unique position to help and support female artists.

“As a woman, I am drawn to the excellence of other women in leadership positions. We do not have many women who are directors of major art galleries, those of us who manage to push through and reach such heights try and help those who are coming through,” she said.

“By doing this we are showing that there are possibilities open to other women who are prepared to work hard, are intelligent, have their own talent, who don’t compare themselves to others but look within to excel in their own private way.

“Women are generally generous to other women because there is not a lot of room at the top. It’s been a very short period since women have been reaching such heights.”
