Call for a Commemoration for Stanhope...?

I heard on the ABC tonight that there are considerations ‘at the appropriate time’ for some type of commemoration to Stanhope and his contribution to the ACT for the past 10 years.

Ideas have included a ‘statue’, a suburb being named after him, renaming the forrest that he built, etc, etc.

I have some issues over a statue, unless of course he’s already put the money aside for it before he left. Perhaps a new type of hotdog… or a sandwich… I’m sure that some Rioters can be more creative!

[ED – If an artistic rioter could send me a drawing of photoshop of a colossal jon stanhope straddling Northbourne, perhaps teabagging the traffic, I would love you long time. images@the-riotact.com ]

I finally saw this on my most recent trip to Canberra. It really does look like a dick, from the right (wrong?) angle. An apt memorial for Stanhope, I think.

Perhaps the phallic owl at the end of Benjamin Way in Belconnen would be an appropriate commemorative. We may never know if Mr. Stanhope was in on this horrible joke, but there is no doubt in my mind that the artist knew perfectly well what he was doing, and what this statue would look like when approached from the north. So now we have an 8 metre, $400,000 phallus for our rembrance of the Chief Minister. And an artist who must be laughing himself silly every time he thinks about it.

There is an inexpensive solution, however. Why not construct a simple curved wall behind the owl. This would eliminate the problem, as well as enhance the view from the front.

Presumably this is the story you’re talking about Frots: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/05/16/3218269.htm

To sum up, Gallagher was asked, probably partly as a joke, at a media conference whether there would be a statue. In explaining that she hasn’t thought about it, she didn’t explicitly say no. Ergo I guess that means there will be a statue.

Move along.

Yep – all tongue in cheek.

But if there was a Colossus of Roads (intentional mistake) statue surely it should straddle the GDE rather than Northbourne??

Yes Al, we are obviously too stupid to pick that one up

PMPL at Editor’s comment and Gerry-Built.

I’m with others, I think there’s already more than enough to remember Stanhope by.

I wouldn’t be opposed to that money being spent on something more useful though.

If John Stanhopless put one up of himself, it would only be pulled down.

I’m not sure why, but the idea of establishing the Jon Stanhope Memorial Hemmorrhoidectomy Unit at Calvary hospital just popped into my mind.

Something about the eventual removal of painful ar$eholes perhaps?

Traditionally memorials were paid for by public subscription.

That is people who cared donated money for it.

But the public don’t care for things the government would like memorialised.

Once upon a time, it was customary to consider memorials for the departed, to remember them for their contribution. While they were alive, it was assumed that they had been rewarded with money and if appropriate accolades and further lucrative opportunities. This was the refined English way. Newer political cultures, particularly in Africa, deemed it necessary for their leaders to be lauded with memorials, public holidays and all sorts of memorials while they were still in the job. Kenyatta was a prime example.

Do we really need to go down that path? To me, erecting memorials to someone just because they did a good job, while they’re still around, cheapens the whole process, and is a reflection of the boganisation of society brought about by the bogan media’s influence.

Yep – heard it on the ABC last night. I’m presuming that Katie is going to delay it…………..until say, the year 2176!

I don’t think it really matters what form the commemorative piece takes – what is more important is that it is only ever half finished… (in the fashion of his greatest contributions to Canberra). Somehow, the “public consultation process” he established should be included; you know the one – it starts with “we’ve made x decision, but we’d like to know what you think about it”… Perhaps, in a similar way to LOST’s four-toed statue – Mr Stanhope’s likeness could have no ears, and a frickin-big mouth?

Pity I can’t use Phooshop here at work, or I’d have a mock up of a Stanhope-faced Collosus of Rhodes on City Hill ready to go.

Strange to give someone a statue when even in his best year, 73% of people in his own electorate didn’t vote for him.
(In any case, I thought the Labor Party only gave out statues of your likeness if you were bought by the Calabrian Mafia the taxpayer picked up the tab.)

So – wait- where is the commemoration for Trevor Kaine, the first Chief Minister to have passed away? Or where is the one for Rosemary Follett, the first Chief Minister, and the first woman to lead a state or territory government (AFAIK)? What about Kate Carnell, who holds the mark as the longest serving Liberal Chief Minister? (We’ll ignore Gary Humphreys, as he is a serving Senator.)

+ 1 for statue straddling Northbourne Ave.

The man spent enough of our time and money building commemorations to himself during those 10 years. The absolute last thing this territory needs is any more time, money, or thought dedicated to him.

The ‘art’ installlations from the GDE (the pile of logs that looks like a pile of %^&* and the other one that looks like the renmants of the bridge collapse), moved to Johns back garden. Permanently.
