I finally saw this on my most recent trip to Canberra. It really does look like a dick, from the right (wrong?) angle. An apt memorial for Stanhope, I think.

We may never know if Mr. Stanhope was in on this horrible joke, but there is no doubt in my mind that the artist knew perfectly well what he was doing, and what this statue would look like when approached from the north. So now we have an 8 metre, $400,000 phallus for our rembrance of the Chief Minister. And an artist who must be laughing himself silly every time he thinks about it.

There is an inexpensive solution, however. Why not construct a simple curved wall behind the owl. This would eliminate the problem, as well as enhance the view from the front.

I’m with others, I think there’s already more than enough to remember Stanhope by.

I wouldn’t be opposed to that money being spent on something more useful though.

If John Stanhopless put one up of himself, it would only be pulled down.

I’m not sure why, but the idea of establishing the Jon Stanhope Memorial Hemmorrhoidectomy Unit at Calvary hospital just popped into my mind.

Something about the eventual removal of painful ar$eholes perhaps?

Traditionally memorials were paid for by public subscription.

That is people who cared donated money for it.

But the public don’t care for things the government would like memorialised.

Once upon a time, it was customary to consider memorials for the departed, to remember them for their contribution. While they were alive, it was assumed that they had been rewarded with money and if appropriate accolades and further lucrative opportunities. This was the refined English way. Newer political cultures, particularly in Africa, deemed it necessary for their leaders to be lauded with memorials, public holidays and all sorts of memorials while they were still in the job. Kenyatta was a prime example.

Do we really need to go down that path? To me, erecting memorials to someone just because they did a good job, while they’re still around, cheapens the whole process, and is a reflection of the boganisation of society brought about by the bogan media’s influence.
