A 63-year-old NSW man will face court this morning charged with firearm offences after yesterday afternoon’s shooting incident at Canberra Airport.
Police will allege the man arrived at Canberra Airport at about 1:20 pm on 14 August before sitting on seats near the southern check-in desks on the first floor.
Five minutes later, he drew a firearm and fired a number of shots into windows of the building, police said.
AFP Airport Police apprehended the man, and nobody was injured.
Canberra Airport was evacuated and members of ACT Policing and AFP Airport Police secured the area and confirmed the man was acting alone.
The man was taken to the ACT Watch House.
Canberra Airport returned to normal operations at about 5 pm, with flights resuming shortly afterwards.
The man has been charged with discharging a firearm at a building, unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm near a person causing alarm.
Police will oppose bail.
ACT Policing urged any witnesses who had not already spoken to police to call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote reference 7187298.
